Pulleys were a bit rusty. Got them cleaned up and it didn't make much difference.

If I decide to sell it I'll probably sell as is so not sure if I wanna buy new belt or mess with it more.

These pulleys are VERY rusty. The idler could be replaced. The transmission pulley can likely be shined up.

I'd say that's been setting outside or on a dirt floor unused quite some time.

Yep, it was outside.

Not a big fan of outdoor, uncovered storage! All my tractors and equipment are inside, if not, they r covered.

I used a flap disk and that got them to bare metal.

I put a new belt on now the idler pullry guard rubs the belt.

Is that little guard suppose to be adjustable or welded to the idler pulley arm? This one is welded.

Is that new belt the right length? It looks short to me from the pic. A proper length belt will allow that idler pulley to go back farther which will relieve that guard from contacting the belt

A stronger spring on the other side to pull that pulley back more may solve the problem. If you can push it back by hand so it doesn't touch the belt then a stronger spring might do it. If you can't push it enough then a longer belt is the answer

Notice how vertical the idler arm for the pulley is in this pic below. Not as much in the recent pic

I was thinking that belt “guard” is supposed to fully stop the belt when you push in the clutch …

Yes, the belt guard supports the bottom loop of the slack belt and helps to stop it from contacting the engine pulley.

If properly adjusted, that tab on the tensioner pulley will pinch  and also help to stop  the belt.

It appears your belt is too short....It should not be rubbing the belt when the clutch is engaged.

The belt is 5/8 x 82" which I thought was the correct belt

That belt would probably be OK, but the tab must be adjusted so it only touches the belt when the clutch is depressed.

Judging by the curve (white circle) on that side of the tab, it looks as if it's been that way for a bit.

We've had Horses like this here and had to bend/adjust/correct the issue.

I do agree with the above post(s)  about the possibility of the belt being too short.

I buy my belts at TSC.     When the size is questionable, I buy several sizes and return the belts That are not used for a full refund.     Just keep the belts and sleeves clean.

I'm thinking it should be 81.9 x 5/8" or 5L.

I've had a few tractors that had challenges getting a belt fitted properly.

Could be a wrong size pulley.

Or belt.

⬆️⬆️⬆️

This method does work. Done it.

I've switched over to using ONLY Wheelhorse/Toro belts for manual transmission tractors.

Haven't had an issue since.

Is the guard hitting to much when the clutch pedal is pressed?

No, that looks good. The belt should stop if the belt guard is in place.

So the belt that was to short was a 82" D&D belt off Amazon.

This belt is from TSC and its a Huskee Blue Kevlar.

Guess they run different.

Anyhoo, It drives ok now, just got to idle it down when taking off in 3rd gear.

They just... Don't.

Belts are supposed to be standardized.

They aren't like tires that can and do vary some.

This is another example of why I went to using ONLY Wheelhorse/Toro belts.

You did perfectly fine with TSC.

Sorry yes it was a 82" , I meant to include that

And I just realized the D&D belt was 7/16 thickness and the TSC is 13/32.
