ebinmaine 67,537 #1 Posted March 1, 2022 I put this in Non Tractor Related because it's really for a truck. Gas engine though so it could apply to Horses to some extent. Just wondering what high temp coatings you've used? Recommend? Do NOT recommend? I'm thinking of using a VHT High heat red. Rust-Oleum also makes one. Thoughts comments questions suggestions opinions...
rmaynard 15,483 #2 Posted March 1, 2022 My opinion only...for oddball things like high heat paint, vinyl dyes, etc., VHT is the best. 3 2
AMC RULES 37,130 #3 Posted March 1, 2022 Never been impressed with that VHT header paint. Have had good results with the Rustoleum black BBQ paint though.
8ntruck 7,007 #4 Posted March 1, 2022 The high zoot high temp coating are the ceramics. Of course, those are not applyable at home. You might wander through the Jeggs speed supply catalog and see what they offer.

We've used the Rust-Oleum flat black barbecue paint on several things and I agree that it seems to work well. The only real complaint I can find with the VHT FLAME PROOF online is kind of a big one. Surface preparation must be 100% perfect or it will peel flake burn fall off whatever... This particular usage is aimed at my exhaust manifolds on a straight six which are three cylinders each so they should fairly easily fit into my kitchen oven but unfortunately I don't think that's going to get hot enough to properly cure. Look through the Eastwood catalog too. They offer several high temp exhaust manifold finishes. 1
JCM 9,168 #7 Posted March 1, 2022 Maybe the newer formula or something has changed. From 1977- 1999 I used VHT on the factory 396/402 cast iron manifolds and then on a new set of Hooker headers for years and never had a problem. Don't remember how I prepped either. 3

If the car beast was running it's likely you followed the "on engine" directions. The VHT is fairly easy to heat cure on a running engine. I might not have that advantage in this case depending on what stage the project is in.
953 nut 55,262 #9 Posted March 2, 2022 I have had great results with the Rust-Oleum 2000 degree paint. Sand blasted a rusty muffler and gave it two coats, next day I put it on the and ran it for twenty minutes like the label said. That was three years ago and it looks as good today as it did then. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Black-Rust-Oleum-Automotive-High-Heat-Protective-Enamel-Flat-Spray-Paint-12-Oz/17203457?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&&adid=22222222227000000000&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=42423897272&wl4=pla-51320962143&wl5=9020677&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=17203457&veh=sem&gclid=CjwKCAiApfeQBhAUEiwA7K_UH45is8ubH2-sSHFtSWT8VMA23XFQmDXup0Ca_k1-eLCCP2lxbia-NhoC34MQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds 2
Moparfanforever 848 #10 Posted March 5, 2022 I painted these three mufflers with VHT cast iron paint. A little goes along way and I have had a single can for quite awhile. It does darken the more you use the tractor.
Ifixoldjunk 778 #11 Posted March 6, 2022 I used rust oleum high heat grill/stove paint. Multiple thin coats seems the way to do it. Scratches very easily even while dry but holds up to heat well.
