parts tractor vs. resto candidate

I have a few that are in what I call the parts pile but other than taking a few things off here and there I think I could probably get most of them running. They are far from pretty tho. I don’t think I would restore any of them. We will see what Alex finds for project tractors and if all else fails maybe we can pull one from there.

There was a guy on eBay and a member here who only sold parts stripped from whole tractors. He would not sell the complete tractor. My heart would break when I would see a picture of an RJ or a 701, etc. But as @roadapples said above, without those tractors being stripped for parts, many of us would not have the ability to complete our tractors.

Bob   I bought a 416 (I think) roller from you several years ago.  still sitting in the barn. Have stolen a few parts off it... Keep looking at  the wiring and pass on a rebuild or re-engine.  I have decided i do not like the newer stuff.  Sometimes our goals /wishes change.  Maybe I should offer it at the show this year....Not that many parts work with my older stuff...

I did not look at either as a parts tractor… when you only have one, what are the parts going to be used on ?

I really don’t think I see any tractor as a parts tractor… I have these grandiose ideas that I can “ make it better “

And besides, a 40 year old Wheel Horse is built better than anything you can buy these days, comparatively speaking.

I just love taking a dirty, rusty, machine and making it nicer !

Well said Newbie.  I was about to put this one in a scrap pile but then I found RS and the BS and realized yah... there are parts out there . Turned out to 2nd pic after one trip to PA BS. I thought were am going to find that SG belt guard.  BS i found dozens all savable.

The addiction began.. a hobby I really enjoy and keeps me out of the taverns. So just not any horse became a parts tractor but another to keep others working.

I used to cringe at seeing A-Z's pics of tractors being stacked up like cord wood on a trailer for parts but I scored an immaculate correct steering wheel from him for my resto. I said a small prayer for the deceased tractor and promptly mounted it. :)

Yeah… parts tractors are a necessity, but I’m so sentimental, I would try to make a tractor out of a pile of parts…

Agreed Newbie ... I prolly have enough parts to make at least three tractors but would most likely end up as a franken horse and not really my cup of tea. I mafiaed a franken 1055 in a real hurry once for parts for a real 1055 once tho. I might give it shot some day tho just for the challenge. A frankie with all sixties parts might be interesting.

I love cobbled parts tractors. While I love all original, I don't own one. My 701 and 310-8 are close, but still modified.

All mine are parts tractors in one way or the other. 3 of my machines are absolute "CPTs". I make do with what I have.

523-H: frame and hydro from a 312-H. Vanguard engine built by me. Hood, fender, and hoodstand from a 518-H, rear wheels and front axle from a 520-H.

520-H: engine, hoodstand, and sheetmetal from one tractor, everything else from another 520.

Bronco 14: hitch arms and hydraulics from a D series. I don't remember where the suitcase weights are from. Rear wheels aren't from a Wheel Horse.

867: least parts swap of most, but even so has an 8-pinion tranny because the original was in several boxes with a destroyed differential. Rear fender from a newer model.

The Ranger: L-157 with full size wheels and an 8 speed from a Work Horse. Rear fenders from a Suburban. Obviously unfinished.

The last tractor keeps changing before I can get much done. Absolutely cobbled. Not sure what it will become yet.
