C145 lift issue

Recommended Posts

mark in ny

While snowblowing today with my c145 with 16 hp engine I noticed I would have to keep having to drop the blower down due to it raising up. Also while idiling it would raise as well. What would cause the hydraulics to keep lifting the blower up? It has the eaton 1100 as well. Thanks

Check the spool valve handle. The lift lever, to make sure it's going all the way back to center.

Not typical to have it lift. Usually leaks in the seals will allow it to drop on it's own. Somehow it's getting pressure to the lift cylinder.

Is it lifting fast?

Lifts normal speed and holds up without dropping letting it sit for a bit.

I mean when it's lifting on it's own

Like 953 wrote, possible seals inside the spool can let fluid by but that fluid might flow back through the same leak if it's sitting without the engine running. If it stays up then the seals might be good.

I write "might" because of my limited knowledge of those actual valves.

If the rod isn't getting back all the way to the center position in the valve, it will leak pressure to the cylinder.

I agree with @953 nut that there is fluid getting into the "lift" gallery in the control valve even while the spool is centered. Likeliest cause is a worn o-ring in the control valve. You don't see the leak because it is inside from one area of the valve to another part. Can behave differently in different directions and under different pressures.

Sounds like you may need to rebuild the spool valve, pressure is leaking by to the UP portion. Lowell @wheelhorseman has the kit you'll need.

Just getting around to fixing this issue, my lift control doesn't look as the same as that one pictured. I put in a email to wheelhorseparts and more looking for which kit to buy but haven't gotten a response or got sent to spam or something. Wasn't sure if there's any difference internally than the one picture vs let's say a 520 style which is what I think I have.

Your valve body may not look like that one in the picture however you should still be able to get a rebuild kit for the one you have. Others here can point you in the right direction as far as where to get one.

I believe Wheel Horse Parts and more has a kit for that valve as well.  It's just two orings.

@mark in ny… Is this the valve you have ?

This is the style spool valve I have on my ‘94 520 H…

On the back side of the spool shaft there is a small screw and a retaining cup or washer. You can slide the spool shaft out of the body after removing the screw and cup. Check the bore and spool shaft for pitting, corrosion and smoothness. When you reassemble make sure everything is clean… really clean !

Lubricate all parts with whatever hydraulic fluid you are using in the hydro transmission.

I used 10w-40 oil in mine… some say 10w-30, but I live down south so I don’t think the 10w-40 is too thick. You may want to use 10w-30 if you are in NY.

I believe the Eaton 100 manual says either will work.

Do you see that acorn nut on the front side of the valve ? I took it off to inspect and clean but DO NOT turn the Allen head screw beneath it !

All I now is it is some kind of adjustment screw that you don’t want to turn.

Posted in another thread that that screw adjusts the pressure relief. Need proper equipment and expertise to adjust it properly. Mess up and you either have no lift power at all or you break stuff.
