Hey buddy I fixed the banner for ya.

We talked about popping the engine off the frame but she figured while working on cleaning it up it would be easier to leave it set.

Jim what color black exactly?

The Paint Department will be spraying the engine tins soon.

This is what the 420 looked like when I got it, not sure of the finish. I used Rustoleum semi-gloss black on the tunnel and hood stand and looks nice. I used semi-gloss on the black mask on the 418 and I think it is a little to glossy. Maybe a satin would have been better on the front end ? When I find a pic I will post it.

All semi-gloss here. Black mask a bit too much shine .

Hood pictured from 418 in semi.  Rust-oleum #  7776830  flat black for hood for the 417-A or a satin ?  Not sure on that which one to use yet. Hood stand and tunnel #  7798830 semi-gloss black

Isn't that a double adjective? :P

All joking aside, I couldn't pay my wife to help me tear down a tractor. Count your blessings! :bow-blue:

Note the cracks in the (insulation?)

@ebinmaine

Some years back at work we found some surface cracks in generator coils. Machine was already being reassembled and no time to order in fancy name brand stuff. Engineer recommended we gently clean the cracks with electrical cleaner and dry them throughly with indirect heat overnight. Then use some clear 3M epoxy to fill the cracks.  You really don’t have to “fill” them, just seal them.  Do a small area at a time facing up so gravity keeps it in the crack.  If it was ok for a 138000v machine I suspect it might just be good enough for 12v.

The black “paint” is actually insulating glyptal paint. You can buy “red glyptal paint at an electrical supply but expensive for the tiny pit you need. So here another tip I learned from a motor rewind shop. Clear Polyurethane Wood finish. Good for at least 480v. Motor shops buy a higher grade (finer filtration) of this from paint manufactures for their large dip tanks. So tooth brush gently clean with electrical solvent in a spray can from auto supply. Dry overnight (don’t want to trap moisture in)  Then give it a coat or 2 of poly.  If all of the black insulating paint looked fragile you could give it a lite coat of poly from a spray can.

@oliver2-44

Excellent. Thank you.

I've been using brake clean to spray out the starters I rebuild.

Is that still ok in this situation?

Any thoughts on how to bench test the alternator?

Seems I've seen that on Redsquare at some point.

Yes, brakeclean should be OK. But I would test a small spot on each starter to insure it doesn’t soften the insulation.  You can test a starter armature with a tester called a “Growler”   In my younger days seems like every auto supply had one. Now it’s been years since I’ve seen one

Are you and Trina now doing FREE restorations?   If so I don't have a tractor that needs it right now, but I could buy one on the way up.  :ROTF:

Long ways from free in this case. Mr Jim has already done a bunch of stuff for us because he's awesome.

But hey, if you want to stop up with something for Trina to do I'll run it by her and see when we can fit it into the schedule.

Her minimum negotiated fee is probably in the neighborhood of an arm and a leg, plus or minus 10%.

With your schedule I don't think we could work out something we could agree on. Thanks Anyway!

My Lead Machinery Dismantler got a little more done today.

I got a text from her a little while ago that said,

If I  was a Dremel looking tool where would I live?

I'm not at the house today so I was a little afraid to ask why someone would want to know such information. Turns out she was grinding off broken cotter pins in the console/transmission tunnel where there isn't much space. I hate to admit it but I've never even considered doing that. 😀

She got that emptied out of all the linkage.

Another text,

A rather large c-clamp was launched into Oblivion.

😂

If any of you find folks would care to guess where Oblivion is perhaps we could look there...

You guys will love this one...

Very early in our coupleship... She had been living at my place just a few weeks.

She gets more time off from work than I do and she was home one day doing what BBT's do best.

I get this text,

How high are your walls?

I...

What??

I knew right then things were gonna be interesting for a while.
