ebinmaine 67,592 #1 Posted February 24, 2022 Well folks. This oughta be fun. @JCM Jim and I took a trip upta Port Clyde Maine last fall to pick up 4 tractors. Ole Jimbo's been very helpful to me n BBT on several occasions and never considers a return of any kind. 2 of the tractors are 1986 417As. Him being a connoisseur of the vintage a 417A has been a "bucket list" ride for Jim. I mentioned this to Trina and she was already planning to restore one for Jim before I even finished the sentence. Seriously. She and I tossed the idea back n forth for a bit and I brought it up to Jim. We've agreed to split the work amongst the 3 of us with The Paint Department doing her magic, me rebuilding the wiring and mechanical things. Jim's gonna be the local 1986 WH expert and help out with everything. This will be a great learning experience for the BBT on how to do fine smooth paint work. ALL hints and advice are requested and appreciated. Here's how we found them in the garage. Loaded up and running 🎶 Today I took some time to move Jim's tractor into the basement workshop and the parts tractor to the outdoor workshop. And just for a little more fun... Here's that tractor being "assist-primed". 2

This 417A is going to be Trina's pet project for the next few weeks / months. Jim has mentioned that it would be neat to have this at his house in the lineup for the September Meet n Greet. I'd bet the BBT will do what she can to make that happen, or earlier. 1 4
Bill D 1,926 #7 Posted February 24, 2022 Cover up the parts tractor. Too many valuable engine parts can be ruined by water that leaking thru the louvers in the hood. I saw that on a 417-8 I picked up. 2

Look at the picture of the shed and you can see where I stuffed it in there....

I don't think I can safely post what I always called that. The first time my wife asked what I was doing when she saw me do that, well... She laughed for quite a while. ...and I can't post her response either! To get back on track: TWO 417-A tractors is awesome. I look forward to seeing the first one finished! 1

We just may well be able to pull that one off if we can get some decent weather so I can get up there. 7 '' to 11 '' of the white stuff possible tomorrow ?

ebinmaine 67,592 #18 Posted February 25, 2022 So here's a pile o pics the BBT took during the first dismantle session today. These are mostly for her own documentation but certainly show the ummm. Foreign matter? That's in there. And remember... @JCM has already removed a BUNCH. 5
JCM 9,177 #19 Posted February 25, 2022 It would be nice if we could find the rest of the factory foot hydro pedal and associated parts when we get the call to head back up for the rest of the pahts in that bahn. 2

c-series don 8,720 #21 Posted February 25, 2022 @ebinmaine Eric, I remember when I restored my first tractor. It was my C-121 and I luckily had my brother who is an auto body man as my coach. I was sanding primer and sanding primer and sanding primer so much I thought I was going to sand my finger prints off. When I was going to stop sanding my brother said “If you want to have the second nicest tractor at the big show we’ll paint it now, if you want to have the nicest tractor there keep sanding!” He’s a perfectionist. One trick I learned was we used grey primer and he would dust it with black spray paint so when I sanded the black would be removed from the high spots and would remain in the low spots. We would repeat this process until when we sanded there would be no black paint.(three coats of primer) The primer was then baby’s ass smooth and finally ready to paint. Basically the better the prep work the better the end result. 2 1

oliver2-44 9,759 #23 Posted February 25, 2022 You might consider an etank to clean a lot of that metal up. It sure helped on my 312 restore. The paint on the 300/400/500 tractors seems harder to get off than the older tractors, but then when it gets rust under it it flakes off in sheets. Almost like its gone through a baking oven or something. Maybe the slight water swirl and bubbling action will keep the etank from freezing. Like a bubble curtain they use in front of dams ans water structures up their in thar noth woods.
JCM 9,177 #24 Posted February 25, 2022 Right side rear axle looks like she's out a hair past the hub ? EB Maybe we should pull them anyway and replace the seals on this one. Appears to be enough lube on the whole tractor they may slide right off with any luck.
