Kohler new style mahle piston vs. old style cast piston

Recommended Posts

Can anyone on here explain why the new style mahle piston has the wrist pin offset from center and the old style cast piston  has a centered wrist pin  ?  and are the wrist pins a different diameter ?

Intrigued, and would like to hear the input on this. I would not think that there would or should be a difference.

Are you sure that you received the correct piston? I have received incorrect parts that were in a correctly marked box.

The new style mahle pistons have a arrow that points to the flywheel side they are only to be installed with the arrow pointing to the flywheel side , old style piston can be installed either way the wrist pin is centered  my question is  why did it go from being centered to  the wrist pin being offset ?

You can't always count on what you look at. And I know a lot of people on here would probably like to see what they're buying before they buy it.

Piston pins are sometimes offset to give more torque output on a small motor - 1980's GM 4 cylinder Iron Duke motors are a good example. The only drawback is that design places a lot of side load on one of the piston skirts and tends to wear the cylinder bore egg shaped. That is what happened to my 1980 Chevy Monza wagon.

I'm under the impression that the only Kohler big block engine well known for an offset piston is the K341.

Notwithstanding that...

I wouldn't be prone to replacing one with the other unless a highly trained engine builder recommended doing so.

yes the standard cast piston is offset  do to the bore not being centered with the crankshaft in  the K341 16hp.   , but the new style mahle for the K321 14hp is also offset to just wondering why Kohler  went to the off set wrist pin for the new style mahle pistons in the 12 , 14  also ?     I have a mahle piston  for a  K321  14hp. 3.500  bore and the wrist pin is offset on it to
