K301 Breather cover

Recommended Posts

JimSraj

Does anyone know if the breather cover is supposed to have a slight hump in the middle of the long sides?  The one on my K301 has a slight curve, away from the block, and I’m wondering if that is supposed to be there and get drawn down when the cover is tightened at the stud.

Also, is there a torque spec for the cover stud nut?

Thanks in advance for advice.

It's bent a tad. If you have a vise you can put that edge in one of the jaws and tap it straight with a hammer. Looks like someone pried it off.

Agree with Mike. It's bent a little. All you can do is try to bend it back a little at a time. Patience is your friend...

Looking at that more, if you take off the red part, does the piece that's not painted only have a hole in the middle. If so you can put a washer and a nut on that part and it should be sealed before you install the red part.....

Thanks guys. I didn’t think it should have that curve in it. It’s on the top and the bottom. The motor leaked oil from there (and under the fuel pump) after a rebuild this summer. Hoping the curve is the reason.

Roadapples-The red part is the cover and the unpainted part holds the reed and screen with a small orange (rubber I think) grommet in the center. It doesn’t take a nut under the red cover as far as I can determine. Two gaskets are used, one against the block and the other between the cover and the part that the reed closes against . Only one stud in the center holds the whole assembly in place. Anyone know of a torque spec for the nut that goes on the stud?

By the way Mike, the bearing plate worked out well. Thanks again. Other than the oil leaks it’s running great!

I think there is a piece like a hose that goes between the red plate and the reed plate. That

looks like they have bowed it in around the hole and pushed it out on the edges. don't know

if I am conveying what I want to say correctly though.

There isn't a nut inside. This is a drawing from the Kohler Service Manual.

Yes, although the one on my k301 is a little different I’m sure there is no nut on the inside.  I have the manual also but it doesn’t spec a torque for the stud nut. Still hoping someone might know. Gonna try to source a new filter and seal before I put it back on.
