rmaynard 15,483 #27 Posted February 20, 2022 Sorry to hear of your mother's passing. 92 is a long time survive in this world. A treasure trove of knowledge has passed. That's the thing I miss the most about not having my parents around, not being able to ask them questions about the past. Condolences sent from us here in Maryland.

She might have been handy around here? Specializing in holiday decorations is an understatement! 1

Achto 27,588 #36 Posted February 21, 2022 (edited) 1 hour ago, WHX?? said: Nepeusken Anti Horse Thieves It is the oldest association in WI. It was formed for the purpose that is in it's name. Horse thieving was a big issue at the time. One example : During the Civil War horses were stolen by civilian's and sold to the US & Confederate army's. Nepeuskun is the home of the Nepeuskun Anti-Horse Thieves Association established in 1859 as a precaution against the theft of that era’s most useful animal. On Dec. 5, 1889 the group was chartered, which was one of the first corporations established and registered with the State of Wisconsin. Its duties were to help track down stolen horses and the people who took them and turn them over to local authorities. These days not many horses are stolen but the association still holds its meeting/dinner once a year on the third Thursday in January. The main course on the menu is oyster stew. This is not a serious gathering for the nearly 100 member group. However, they have a sheriff and horse retrieving committee just in case. Humor plays a big role for members of the organization, which charges $2 for a lifetime membership and you don't need a horse to join. https://www.riponpress.com/editorial/column/column-140-years-later-the-horse-thieves-group-s-event-is-stew-enjoyed/article_7499e3b0-d008-5658-bd54-7da2bc025eb3.html Edited February 21, 2022 by Achto
WHX?? 48,821 #37 Posted February 22, 2022 2 bucks for a life time member ship!?! I'm joining and you are too! I'm sure mom would like that. We'll show up at the meeting in dress and claim we have a problem. We wouldn't be lying that's fer sure. 23 hours ago, Achto said: they have a sheriff and horse retrieving committee just in case. I like the humor thing and we have large herds that need protecting. We could also use the retrieving committee for those boys from MN.

Great way to honor @Achto’s Mom and deal with you pesky Cheese Head wranglers at the same time…

formariz 11,987 #40 Posted February 23, 2022 What a wonderful thing to see someone at that age with such a zest for life and living. And what privilege and example to the ones witnessing that incredible example. It just inspires joy and confidence in ourselves. A great loss when someone like that passes , even to the ones that never had the fortune of meeting her.
