Facebook Marketplace

I don't have a Facebook account, but I do like to check out their Marketplace every once in a while.  Up until just a couple of days ago, I was able to browse to my heart's content, without an account, but it looks like you now have to log in to even see what's available there.  Can anybody confirm, is Marketplace no longer open to the general non-Facebook public?

I can’t confirm that as I have an account on FB. But to be honest I’m surprised you were able to browse FB Marketplace without an account.

I am too actually, but I've been doing it for months.  And they haven't even interrupted my viewing with requests to sign up.  I never tried to list anything, or reply to one, I'm sure they would have required an account for that. :confusion-shrug:

Several yrs ago I 'joined' at the grandkids urging .... didnt take long to see that that wasnt gonna be happening ----- but as relapsed as I must be (I havent 'signed' in in a loooong time) But I too have been prowling the mkt place - in fact I just bought a truck off there last week, and several mos ago I got a D200 off there.

Marketplace is one of those things that is .... some good and some not so good. There is literally thousands of items and they have this rather extensive menu to let you add parameters to cull out the gobs of stuff that is not what you want ---- except it dont work worth a flip! so you have to look at stuff all over the states despite asking for within 100 miles of your zip, price range, model, etc etc. It does work... sorta, thankfully. Then to contact the seller is a rather convoluted process - course Craig list is too.

Here in the South I HAVE to spread out my searches for small (read, Wheel Horses) tractors, they just were not widely sold in this area

I noticed that, too.  You change your location, or distance from that location, and sometimes it sticks, sometimes it doesn't.  Same for the sort order, and other filters you can use.  I never did really understand that.

MP works for me.   Buying and selling several boats and boating equipment in the past several years.    Much better results than CL.   Yes, I have an account, so I don't know if you can use it as a guest.

They do track guest time on marketplace.

Craigslist is dead, eBay completely sucks now for selling.  I tried listening a few things on marketplace.  I just get hundreds emails asking "if it's still available?".  But it seems to be the spot where stuff is selling now.  I found a few good buys on FB

No account here and was able to browse like you said then one day the screen changed and wanted me to sign in . Now days I have to be diligent about what I want to see because I get about 15min each day to search before it locks me out . :( I will never join any of those sites.

It's weird, I've saved a dozen or so Wheel Horse listings in my browser's "favorites", I can still see them, I just can't get into Marketplace directly without signing up.

For those of you who are adamantly against FB, just know that you can join up and only use marketplace.
You DO NOT have to view all the nonsense posts and such. You also DO NOT have to start adding friends to use Marketplace.

Thank you sir, I did not know that. :handgestures-thumbupright:

--------

Edit:  Would that also give us the ability to respond to their listings?

I bought and sold a few things on marketplace, but it is a real CF.  I hate it but it has become a necessary evil since so many can't communicate any other way.

Yes, but you have to also install or load up FB Messenger..it’s Facebooks way of messaging between seller and buyer. It’s actually great because the seller or buyer never sees your personal phone number or email.

Hmmm...  Rethinking Facebook, just for Marketplace.

Exactly,  But you can join well screened  groups that have a common interest.   A couple I have joined are Wheel Horse and S Morgan Smith Hydro.    You are then notified when new posts are made to the group.

I agree 100%, but it's still my biggest venue for selling brake linings. However, I have had brake linings listed on Marketplace and haven't sold a single one.

Same Here. I've bought and sold quite a bit of stuff on MP the past 2 years. As far as "Is it still available" I accidentally clicked on a picture of something I was looking at and it sent this message to the seller automatically. didn't mean to send it. I think a lot of those messages come from that.

As a non-FB person, I could never access the MP site until somebody posted a link to a tractor ad somewhere that worked as a back door.  Functionality is limited, but it’s possible to filter and look at most anything thru that saved link.  There seems to be a lot more on there than CL, who’s best days are probably over.
