Quick economics pop quiz for breakfast. (Hunting)

1. It’s cheaper to go outside and pop a rabbit than to run to the store for lunch meat.  It’s also quicker to obtain said meat.

true.

2. Time is money.  The time it takes to clean those pesky hairs from a hare…

equals about forever.

3. No lunch meat from town will equate to our next meal!

TRUE

extra credit:

A 17 hmr is an adequate tool for the job.

true and false.  It is quick, humane and perfectly accurate.  A spent .170” projectile > a :wh: axle.

I’m thankful for a home cooked meal.  I’m thankful for the right to keep and bear arms in a safe and responsible manner.  I’m thankful that my wife and daughters will try any meat I toss on the table at least once.  I’m thankful for a plentiful amount of hares al day every day.  I’m thankful for small game season too. :USA:

Peter’s on the smoker and should be done around 12:30 or 1:00.  Yum.

You are far better off than I in that department, Kevin. There was a great source, now long gone, near us in the 1980's that raised and sold meat rabbits. My Father-in-law was a super cook and invited us over for Sunday dinner. My wife asked what he was making, he replied "Rabbit, you'll like it. Tell the kids it's chicken, just don't ask for a wing". Superb it was ....

Good meal that you are preparing. A 17 is a great reach out and touch them bullet for small game and varmints. Me I am a 22 man. Enjoy the bounty and I know of no tips to keep the hair off of the meat!

I used to bbq backyard squirrel until my brother told my kids they were just big rats.  My father in law used to raise rabbits domestic and cottontail. Excellent bbq.

Going a bit off original topic, but still about our little forest friends....

When I moved here on 5 acres in 1977 out in the 'boonies' I had the following wild life...

The really pretty big red squirrels

Roadrunners "meep meep!"

Armadillos

Couple species of hawk family

White herons just at dusk heading to the large lake

White tail deer 2-3 times a week, now 2-3 times a year!

possums

several varieties snakes (I found a 49" copperhead in the bluebird box one day -- HUGE!)

Blue birds

Theres probably a couple more I'm missing but you get the drift....

Sadly, now I see,

dozens of the small (rat size) gray squirrels

Crows in the dozens

and while I - so far! - havent seen the wild hogs in my yard (thankfully!) theyre coming-- yuk!

And thats about it, --- did some one mention 'global warming??

I know a lot of members here live rurally, have yall seen a decrease like this??

I and my neighbor tried to find that info - he had bagged one at 44" previously - but never found it. Did you find that info? and where?

Could be a reson the rabbits, squirrels, and bluebirds disappeared.

My area is covered with bald eagles, red tail and cooper hawks, red fox and coyote.      The small animals have a tough time surviving.     The good news is the predators turned to  scavangers and keep the  road killed deer cleaned up.

If possible, I hang by the head and case skin from the neck to the rear, cutting off feet as i go.   Then clean out the innards last.

Like a lynch or noose @Ed Kennell?  I was glad to have a few inches of fresh snow to clean it at least.

Well, I’m sitting on a baby today and she just woke up from nap time.  Meat should be done.  Ugh the smoker went out.  Temp changed a bit lately, I hope the auger didn’t get swollen pellets!

It seemed done, but cold.  I tossed it in some bacon grease for a few minutes each side and presto!  Lunch is served!

Looks good but might be a little dry? Rabbit & squirrel don't have much fat so just the way it is.  I know yer on a smoker kick but Ed's insta pot with potatoes & carrots in a stew is probably a better choice.

This might bring out the German Hosen in ya!

Your German exchange student should know all about it Kev... a staple over there. My grammys were both hard core Germans and had it down pat. They seared the meat after a egg/flour wash before the pot. It was delish. I tried to make it once with a bunny bushy tail combo once but it turned out lousy. :(

Black Lab I had at the time even turned his nose up at it!

We call them Tree Rats here - not to be confused with seagulls - known as Sky Rats...

A noose works, or one of these.       Head wedged in the big Vee or legs in the small ones.

@Pullstart @Ed Kennell @SylvanLakeWH @WHX??Not sure how rabbit or squirrel tastes but I definitely know how pheasant tastes! He’s me and my boy Wallace after we did a shoot that we would get paid to flush and retrieve birds. This is ten years ago, however I still have access to the estate where these shoots take place and get cleaned pheasants to take to my firehouse(volunteer) for our monthly dinner.

I had  liver springers (Barney and Brandy.) in the '70s.   Smarter than most humans I know.
