If someone made 6", 8" and 12" wheel covers

Recommended Posts

Even plastic/chrome...with no design, to fit mower wheels and priced them at 100-125 a set id think they could make a killing.  Could do yellow, chrome, and offer various decals or adhesived emblems to lower cost.

One would have to sell a bunch of them to recover tooling costs.  Probably two or three dies for each size, and a stage or two of roll from tools that might work for all three sizes would be needed.  Might be trademark or copyright issues to deal with as well.

They could probably be spin formed as well.  Tooling costs would be lower, but you would need a spin from machine.  Getting the smooth, shiny finish would be more difficult with this method if steel was used.  Finishing would be easier if aluminum were used.

I wonder about 3D printing, fairly cheap, strong, can be colors, cant powder coat it...yet, but chrome paint (its a thing now) could work

There are 3D filaments that are not bad..

@Wheel Horse 3D - you are the resident 3d printer guru.  This possible?  Would have a lot of support structure.  Maybe print it on edge, with the axis of rotation horizontal to minimize the support needed?

WH actually made plastic ones in the latter years. I've seen pics on the 260 series machines I think? May still be available, though I have no idea what the part numbers are.

They had a nice chromed emblem in the center, and were silver overall like the wheel itself.

Way better than steel, as they don't rust. Plus they give a little without denting.

I won't comment on those kinds of needs...

Could this be as simple as cutting a disk out of plate, attach some threaded rod on the back and bolt them onto the rim from the back side?

Because that should be easy enough to diy.. Just get some aluminium or stainless plate, polish or paint it and add decals or even some (3D printed) emblems. :twocents-02cents:

Some "salt flat racer covers" ??

If not for the valve stem hole, these would be acceptable.

I would agree there. THAT coming from someone who has both green and yellow, and black, and white, and... soon to be... another red.

Yeah finding 8s and 12a isnt impossible, its finding a set that matches front and rear..for a reasonable price.  Like...200+ for used dented or rusty ones, isnt a fair deal

I don't hate green ones, white ones, yellow or whatever. JD makes some good stuff and no one can deny it. User friendly? Nope. Easy to work on? Nope. Priced out of this world because of the brand? Yep.

I just think that quality revolves around more than a color or name. That's more where they lost me forever.

I like all the top tier GTs...Wheel Horse were simple, compact, reliable, but..(almost) no support for a 3pt, front hydraulics, shaft drive, or rear pto.  Cub (IH) had the beefy transmission, good frames, comfortable...but among the worst implement attachment setup ever concocted...and again, not alot of auxiliary support.  Deere stepped into the Super GT league, 300/400 series, 2 and 3 spools of hydraulics, diff lock, split brakes, 3pt, front mid and rear pto, power steering....they made some beefy units.  They were also quite expensive, not hard to work on though.

Wolf whistles, 4x4 kits that were really dual wheel adaptors.

Weeell....theres these: 6 inch inserts i did for the wheel weights on Dig Dug. Probably print best flat. My big printer is 12 inches square, so thats about my max size.
