1999 268H - Steering Shaft Replacement

Recommended Posts

The gear at the bottom of my steering shaft is skipping and so I'm attempting to replace it.

I need to remove the steering wheel, and I've done enough searching to know that's usually a difficult procedure due to corrosion.  In this case, though, I think I just don't know what I'm doing.   I pulled the cover off the steering wheel and easily removed the nut.  There's no sign of rust or anything but I hit it with PB Blaster anyway.  The wheel doesn't come off the upper shaft.  I've been banging on it, and prying at it, but I'm afraid to use more force because I don't see any roll pin or anything else holding the wheel aligned to the shaft and feel like I'm missing something that should be obvious.

The base of the steering wheel is notched as if there should be a nut and bolt through there, but there's no sign of anything like that.

So at the risk of embarrassment, I'm here asking for guidance.  Thank you!

I've actually already found the Service Manual.  It says:

Quote

Remove the roll pin, steering wheel, spacer, and spring from the top of the steering shaft (Figure 26)  (Note: Some units use a retaining nut and washer located under the center cover of the steering wheel).

As far as I can tell, my steering wheel has no roll pin, it's just the nut holding it down (mentioned in the Note).  Is there anything else holding the wheel to the shaft?  I can't seem to find anything.

EDIT: Nevermind, it just needed more beating and swearing.
