ACman 7,630 #1 Posted February 11, 2022 (edited) So I had a 1980 Ski Doo with the 377 engine with points and always lost spark on pto side cylinder after about 15min of running it . So I got curious and started looking around for a cdi conversion. I came across a old snowmobile forum and found a guy that started making his own conversions. Well this isn’t just for snowmobiles. He’s running one on a old Case 220 with great success . You still use the points as a trigger but everything else is no longer needed. These aren’t cheap (just my opinion) but they do have its place. It’s more performance oriented and so more for the pullers ect . The only issue he is having is with the microchip shortage . Here’s a link to his post on the snowmobile forum and I hope this will help us save some old iron from the scrapyard . https://vintagesleds.com/bs/index.php/topic,351825.0.html Edited February 11, 2022 by ACman 2 2
ACman 7,630 #2 Posted February 11, 2022 (edited) His words… Regarding an ignition replacement, we offer a module that converts the points system over to a CDI type ignition, but retains the points to trigger it. It's mainly for the older engines that did not have any solid-state systems. Here's a link to the module...it's out of stock right now. https://cdibox.com/product/points-fireplug-cdi-conversion-module/ Most guys are using these on snowmobiles from the 60/70's. Some installs on pulling tractors, old Cushman scooters, even a 1970s motorcycle with a Wankle engine. Basically if it had points, this will work if you add a small 12V battery and CDI type coil. I ran it on my 12hp Kohler on my CASE 222 for summer testing years ago when it was being developed. Started way easier & idled down lower than I ever thought it capable. There is some work involved, requiring the removal of any magneto source coil and condenser, so only the points remain. Everything is easily reversible if it is to be converted back to stock. All feedback has been positive, as it makes them run so much better with a strong spark Edited February 11, 2022 by ACman 2

Beap52 1,198 #4 Posted February 12, 2022 I had a C-145 that I converted to electronic ignition. I ran it for 4 years or more and it never gave me any problem. I believe I purchased it from Kirk Engines and was simple to install. Only a very small voltage goes through the breaker points thus they last a long time. The electronic box I had even had a LED light that lit every time the spark plug fires. The price, if I remember correctly, was about 30 dollars. I have since sold the C-145 in favor of a 520H.

I just went to his site and saw this part. Wow, your correct the wiring diagram is super easy to read and understand. Totally will think of this for a furture upgrade. Thank you!
ebinmaine 70,810 #6 Posted February 12, 2022 While the Kohler engine in particular has easily accessed points it's great to see more options for upgrades and replacements. It's nice to have a 40 or 60+ year old engine that starts instantly and runs a bit smoother. With a better spark and more consistent timing fuel consumption should decrease as well. @Ed Stoller has done some research to this direction as well, for Tecumseh.
