Wheel hub removal

I’m looking for suggestions, I’ve fooled with this for 2 days with no luck. I’ve put what I think is more than enough heat on this hub 3 times with the puller loaded as much as I dare, Tried beating on it with brass drift hot and cold, soaked in WD 40. This is the thread I reference as a go-to for pulling hubs. Scroll down some and you'll see a bunch of great ideas.

 

Biggest thing to remember is do NOT use a three-jaw puller.

I see one set screw. many of these newer hubs had a second set screw 90 degrees off.  Is there a sheared off one still in there?

@41 CHEVY , 3 jaw pulley is not solid enough , a strong back flange and a small hydraulic piston on shaft end will do it , pete

Like 41chevy - - last yr i tried for a week to remove hubs with 3 puller, plus map gas heat, plus penetrant etc -- and rubber mallet - - nothing worked  - finally had to take it to a shop

Don't beat on that hub with a hammer. The axle is only held in with a C clip...

Another reference point for why you should never use a three-jaw puller is that I've been told it will squeeze in on the diameter of the hub which is only making it tighter on the axle. 

 

Situations like yours is one of the multitudes of justifications I used to go out and spend some money on a 20-ton press.

Quite a few on ebay, used and New. I think it's called a Bearing puller...

Effective, indeed. Made this one last year as I posted before. Used the HF Large Bearing Separator, had the Snap-on fine pitch screw, made the rest. As others had noted in prior posts, smack the hub or puller while using it - the shock from the impact helps loosen it.

A been there, done that tip - position the keyway at the 12 o'clock position, remove the 3/8" setscrew completely and flood the hole in the hub with penetration oil - FIRST!

Look into the set screw hole and see if the key is centered.  If the keyway in the hub is badly worn the hub can be blocked by the key in the wrong position to follow the keyway.

Don't know if it's common on these hubs but sometimes there's a second setscrew under the first one.. :confusion-scratchheadyellow:

Bill, when using it, did you notice if the bolts on the bearing splitter were wanting to bend?

 

Would this be a possible improvement on the design?

Use Kroil instead of WD40.  It is what all the professional maintenance people use for really tough jobs.  I used it on hubs and steering wheels and I never broke a steering wheel.  I also had a hub puller like the one in Squonk's Picture.  Sold it to someone on RS when I liquidated my fleet. 

 

Be patient.  You have to give the Kroil time to seep in.  When removing steering wheels, I would spray the area once a day for 3-5 days before even attempting to pull it off.  By then, I did not even need a wheel puller.  Simply blocked the front wheels and put some torque (by hand) on the steering wheel and it would come right off.

WD 40 original formula is not now and never has been a penetrant. 

IMHO PB Blaster should be ignored. 

 

I've also had good success with old fashioned Liquid Wrench.

Agreed and I'd add that's the case for all rust penetrant.  

 

It took years to get rusty and stuck. 

It isn't going to be freed up in a few minutes.

I've had pretty good luck with it, but I admit I've never compared it to Kroil.

 

WD-40 is good if you have bad spark plug wires and they get wet.

That's about all.  No 'lasting' lubricant qualities, it evaporates in a day or two.

Smells nice though... I sometimes use it as a deodorant!  Chicks dig it.

i tried one theses pullers and i still couldn't get it off . had hub glowing cherry red  with torch . used mac tools 3 jaw puller got one off second one ruined the puller and eventually broke the hub took grinder and split the hub on axle shaft and still had to chisel it off . luckily found a hub locally for 15 bucks . i never siezed    crap out them when reinstalling them if ever had to get them back off mac tool guy did replace my puller good thing

@Jeff-C175 No, the hardened shafts worked fine. Yes, it would be an improvement, similar to the puzzle disk that @gt14rider shared above.
