Not running right

Yeah, but as long as it's not clogged up, once the filter fills with fuel, the fuel should just flow through.

It might take a little longer to get the filter filled the first time when newly installed, but after that should be no different.

Wwhatever you do concerning fuel, do it outside! And be safe!

This is a kohler filter i cut open, just a normal pleated filter inside, this one went 450hrs commercially and while filthy..still mowed and ran fine.

Actually, I would expect that a larger filter would have more surface area on the filter media, and more filter area would mean that much less restriction in the filter, and a longer life before totally clogged.

There ARE different micron measurements of the filters.  If they are too fine a media they may not be appropriate for gravity fed systems.

But we're talking pumped applications, so that's just a point of information for the pedantic persons among us.

I haven't really ever seen a filter that didnt free flow fuel, but some auto filters have an internal check valve and dont flow both directions.

You need to quit obsessing over the fuel filter, that ain't the problem.  Like Ed said, when replacing a fuel filter in old, rotten, ethanol wasted fuel hose, expect some debris to be knocked loose.

I expect the issue is in the carburetor.

He changed the spark plugs but we didn't see the number on those Champions.

No, he definitely doesn't want to put the old plugs back in.

One was a champion with broken porcelain, but it did have the tapered seat which I believe is correct for the Onan.

The other one was a gasketed typed and completely wrong plug for his engine.

By the way, I can't guarantee that the fuel filter is the issue... (although I'd bet money that this is the culprit)... it might not be.

Definitely sounds like something fuel related though.

Tests you could do...

Bypass the fuel filter altogether temporarily.

Use a dummy fuel tank and gravity feed fuel to the engine.

Spray carb cleaner into the intake to see if that makes the engine run better...

Take the fuel line off and verify that the fuel pump is pumping properly.

Don

Im going to put the stock fuel filter on it and see what happens.

I put RS14YC new spark plugs back in it.

Is that the correct heat range?  Not sure but I think that engine should have a little hotter plug?  RS17 ?

Anyway, it wouldn't cause the issue you're having now, so don't worry about it for now.

While a lot of the subjects approached above on this have their merit, and could cause problems, what I suggest is replacing the fuel line, fuel filter more in line with what is actually needed, although the one you have may very well work, flush and clean gas tank, make sure the pet cock has the screen in the tank, or just get a new pet cock. See if it runs okay with the fuel cap off… the cap may not be venting causing a vacuum build up in the fuel line.

After you do these things, turn the engine over with the fuel line run to a container so that you may be sure you are getting sufficient flow to the carb.

On any machine that I do not know the history of, I would make sure my fuel and the delivery of that fuel through a clean fuel system was addressed first. With that, a good spark and and new plugs, my next step would be clean the carb.

The old number is RS14YC, for newer engines it is RS17YX, either one is correct but the newer one has the small center electrode and works a bit better.

Well, that fuel line is pretty crusty there buddy... you might have gotten some in the carb...

@Jeff-C175 and Red are correct. The fuel filter I was using before has a check valve. I went out and checked (somehow I still have it). It wasn't the size or the filtering medium... it was the internals that were keeping it from flowing. I put it on... the first way... it didn't run... then I switched directions... and my machine ran great. It was the internal valving.

I always thought it was the size, filtering medium, restriction... etc... but I was wrong. It does take a LONG time after putting it in correctly to get fuel... over 45 seconds of cranking... but it does work. :)

Which is best done in stages and allowing the starter to cool between stages, OR getting on your knees and 'servicing' the fuel system to prime the lines and filter.

Nah you make that starter earn its keep🤣

Onans i hand choke when they run dry, usually fills the bowl in 3 or 4 seconds, had a few that refused to self prime from dry.

:text-yeahthat:

Except it's not a bad idea to move that filter and locate it before the fuel pump. Running all that crap through the pump can effect the performance of the check valves in the pump. Not a big deal but if the lines are being replaced, might as well.

Can you please post a pic and info on that filter? That would be a nice feature to have for the tractors with the tank under the seat. Kill 2 birds with one stone

Pardon the green... :bow-blue:

Napa 3032. I noticed on newer filters (mine is probably 5-6 years old) there is an arrow that tells you which way the flow goes... mine... for some odd reason... has no arrow... :dunno:

Obviously... no arrow means... no peace from... :angry-banghead:

I don't like the "metal" as... I can't see the fuel going through... BUT... it works... :)

May be funny, but you do what you gotta do. Had to do that a lot before I went to an electric pump. Which was after I changed to clear line and could see what was going on....
