Not running right

Ok my Onan P220 wont run without half choke at all it smoke sputters and stalls. it ran fine when i replaced the parts now it wont run properly any ideas.

Dark smoke is usually too much fuel.

Needing choke is usually a carb obstruction or a missing welch plug on the carb.

Probably smoking because it is set on choke.

 

Try one diagnostic trick. Take off the air filter, start the engine, put it on run, and spray carb cleaner into the intake. See if it runs right.

 

Also, where did you get the fuel filter that you are using?

Yeah, because choke is on, not allowing air in.

 

Air/fuel ratio sounds off.

 

I personally didn't like the look of that fuel filter when I first saw it.

Do you have a mechanical or electric fuel pump?

 

You need to make sure that fuel is running through that filter. Take a fuel line off AFTER the filter and check to see if fuel is running through...

I had the tractor sitting outside the door cant get it out i was afraid it would die and wouldnt start and then i or end up stuck again like last night

If the filter is too big, the fuel pump would not be able to pump the proper amount of fuel to the engine, leading to a fuel starvation, and therefore needing to run it on partial choke to achieve a fuel/air ratio that the engine will tolerate.

 

Running with partial choke will cause overheating among other issues that will commence.

I would just go to Lowes, Home Depot, or somewhere like that and buy a $9 fuel filter from there... universal for small engines...

By the way, I can't guarantee that the fuel filter is the issue... (although I'd bet money that this is the culprit)... it might not be.

 

Definitely sounds like something fuel related though.

 

Tests you could do...

 

Bypass the fuel filter altogether temporarily.

 

Use a dummy fuel tank and gravity feed fuel to the engine.

 

Spray carb cleaner into the intake to see if that makes the engine run better...

 

Take the fuel line off and verify that the fuel pump is pumping properly.

@Snoopy11 just gave an excellent ck list - run thru that.

 

I dint think its been mentioned but the float could be stuck and not shutting off. My B43 Onan is quite different, but the carb is .... finiky? and the float will stick for no apparent reason --- take it apart, run some carb cleaner thru and ..... its OK!

I thought the same thing... but it was running fine before... so... digging into the carb would be my last suggestion.

 

Best advice I can give... when you do something... and it makes an engine run worse... it is seldom something off-base... normally... reversing... or fixing what you just did... will fix it. Not all the time... but definitely more than not.

Never heard of too big a filter causing an issue, Kohler service kits often provide one of if not the largest fuel filter on the market.  Ive personally run tractors with 3 filters (1 v

Coarse and one fine pre-pump and 1 fine post-pump) with no adverse effects.
