How would I go to getting this overcoat off and getting back to the original without destroying its original paint. on the fronts on the insides. All the rest of it is gray except the insides of the front rims

Easy Off oven cleaner should get that grey paint off. Try a little spot first. Spray it on, let it sit for 10min and then wash it off with soap & water. Just a heads up, I would guess that some one painted them trying to improve their appearance. You may not like what you find under that paint. I guess that if you don't like what you find you could always repaint the rims once it warms up out side.

Agreed.  It’s impossible to imagine anybody would have repainted those wheels because they loved that color gray.  Original paint was probably roached.

How many cans would it take to do all four wheels inside and out?

 I would think two should do it, couple coats each rim.

Is that product a match to the Wheel Horse gray for wheels?  At that price, I’m guessing it’s high quality stuff in any case.

Brockport Bill

i had a couple sets of rims sand blasted -- modest expense  -- others i used 90 degree grinder, or mini grinder or even a scaler to get into cracks and seams -- the appearance  difference after sand blasting makes for terrific difference in final look
