The hood is slotted by the hinge so that you can loosen the bolts & slide it back some. Hood should meet up with the dash like this.

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with getting someone that knows how to do it do it… even better would be if they were willing to let you help so you could learn how. We always learn from each other here on the Redsquare. To me that’s what it’s all about… Edit: Sorry… I made this post before I seen @Achto ‘s post about getting someone to show/ help you. Horse Newbie 7,075 #159 Posted February 4, 2022 (edited) @TJ Salyers Do not be discouraged if people on here prod you to step outside your comfort zone… I was working on my first horse , the 1994 520H, trying to get all the systems up to snuff. I forgot what I was trying to figure out… may have been the regulator, or trying to figure out how to wire a non-factory oil pressure sensor. Whatever it was, I had the Onan manual and was on here asking questions left and right, and members here gladly answered them. But one time @lynnmor suggested I read the section in the manual, perform some tests, and post the results, then he or others here may be able to help… In other words he was trying to get me to learn on my own, read the manual, and not be too quick to ask others to fix my problems. It’s that teach a man to fish, feed him for life thing… Of course I still reach out to people here with questions just about every day, and I’m sure I will continue to do that. Each time you come to the Redsquare you will learn something… I know I do ! Keep making that Horse better, stronger, faster… we can rebuild him… oh wait, I had a flashback to an old TV show… Edited February 4, 2022 by Horse Newbie 1
TJ5208 1,824 #161 Posted February 4, 2022 I got it underneath the hood it don't want to go under the hood correctly and hopefully the pressure will bend it back in shape I went ahead and latched the hood. 1

TJ5208 1,824 #163 Posted February 4, 2022 (edited) So if I did a pulley swap will he still pull like he used to. Edited February 4, 2022 by TJ Salyers

A smaller pulley on the transmission input shaft may speed it up a bit… but most guys on here that I’ve seen do a larger pulley on the engine combined with a smaller pulley on transmission input shaft. Personally I don’t care for that sort of thing because if I wanted a go cart I would get a go cart… Now fast cars… that’s a different story ! However I’m sure there are fellows on here that can share a lot of their experience with making the Wheel Horse faster.
TJ5208 1,824 #165 Posted February 4, 2022 If I didn't have to put the battery in there this is what I would put in it. wonder if you could hear it over the tractor.

I like cruising myself… and I plan to use my Horses, although gently, so there’s really no need for speed. Again, it is yours to do as you please, and I have seen some stupid fast tractors. Not stupid as in stupid… stupid as in real fast. The first thing to do in my opinion is to work out the bugs to make it dependable . Then it won’t be aggravating you with little things when you do ride your Horse.

Spray it down with Purple Power or Mean Green and pressure wash it. Blow it good and dry with a leaf blower. Take the battery out when you do it. Wash all of that dirt and grime off. Check you wires for knicks, cuts, or bare spots and repair if needed. Clean on it. Check the 9 pin connector and if you see any burnt pins/ sockets, take those wires out of the 9 pin connector and put back together with bullet connectors. Use shrink tube where the bullet connectors are crimped to the wires. Sand all electrical connections clean and put dielectric grease on the connections when you reconnect. New air filter. New plugs. New fuel filter. Change oil in engine ( Ask on here which NAPA GOLD oil filter to get ) Change transmission gear oil Pour it in using a funnel EXTREMELY SLOW, a little at a time, check level often. (80w-90 weight) with tractor LEVEL. You will be glad you did ! Just some suggestions… so you’ll have plenty of material for “What Did You Do To Your Wheel Horse Today.” Edited February 4, 2022 by Horse Newbie
Handy Don 12,237 #170 Posted February 4, 2022 (edited) @TJ Salyers Just a couple notes: - I'm sure you noticed that the light switch doesn't match the test switch on the other side. It's a hack replacement and getting it to fit into the dash without messing up the indicator display panel will be tricky if not impossible. You need the correct switch. - Please do not try to mess with pulley sizes to get a hydrostatic drive tractor to go faster--it won't work and it'll just p*** off the transmission. See many other threads on this topic and carefully read the Eaton 1100 manual specifications section. Taller tires can do it (24 or 25") or, in extremis, find a 520HC transaxle (they had faster final gear ratios). Oops, correcting 'cause this is a 520-8. When you change pulleys to increase the speed of the tractor, you are trading torque (pulling power) for speed. Increasing the input pulley speed on the transmission by a given percentage will reduce the torque input to the transmission by the same percentage.
