Might take the blade off the 520-8 tomorrow just want to get some pictures without the blade on there it's not too hard to take off and put back on and then I can just go out and ride around without having to worry about that hitting anything

Get NGK # TR4/3754 or Champion # RS17YX/909 spark plugs.  The NGK are better, Champion no longer produces a quality product.  Hopefully the heads aren't ruined from the wrong plugs being installed.

I think you need to back up and go over this engine properly and skip the joy riding till it is done.  For example, I haven't heard that you did a valve adjustment.  We stand ready to help if you want to do it right.

Would I need to do a valve adjustment because the tractor was only used to plow snow sorry just trying to make sense of what the valve adjustments do I've been trying to study up on this engine.

As Dan @Achto and my dad says if it ain't broke don't fix it because you might do more damage than good.

And in plus it runs good and doing a valve adjustment is probably going to be way over my head.

Valve adjustment and decarbon of the heads is regularly scheduled maintenance of an Onan P series engine. Doesn't matter what it was used for.

Two years ago I re-did a P218. I'd never worked on a twin before and was very intimidated by the (to me) complexity.

With encouragement from this group, I went at it slowly and carefully, step-by-step, and it came out quite well.

Yes, I did bring some applicable mechanical skills and tools to the party from other work I'd done, I had a sheltered place where I could leave the "work in progress", I enjoy researching problems to find solutions, and I had the time to learn before doing. Plus, I was game to give it a go. I have friends expert in other areas, though, who don't know a carb from a differential and simply don't care to, so I fully recognize that for your own reasons you aren't going into this machine.

All of that said, I encourage you to start looking now, before you have the pressure of an urgent need, for a shop that you're willing to trust to do the necessary preventative maintenance at a price you find fair.

Good luck! :)

And it's a 'good thing' that if you don't feel comfortable, or equipped to do something, you don't wanna go in there and mess something up.

But DEFINITELY put the correct plugs in there!

And if you don't want to decarbon the heads, use some seafoam in the fuel.

Or a healthy dose. Always.

Of course I use it in everything that runs on gasoline anyway...

TJ, take a look at this link. These manuals are written so pretty much anyone can get in there and perform scheduled maintenance, or even up to full-on rebuilds. If you hit a snag, post up your question. Most anyone here can help you.

TJ… I’m not by any means telling you what you should do… it’s your machine.

B U T… a valve adjustment is not that hard.

I did it to my P220 Onan, and I am not a small engine mechanic by a long shot.

Before you tear into it, watch some videos on YouTube, check here for videos and pics with instructions, and as @lynnmor has said “We are here to help.” There is also an Onan P series engine shop manual on here that you could download also.

I downloaded it to my phone, emailed it to myself, and then had it printed so I could have a paperback manual… I read things better out of a book than I do off of a phone screen.

Yeah, you may miss out on some seat time while you order Genuine Onan parts such as intake and exhaust gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and other items needed to reassemble, but you will get more out of the engine if you try to maintain it best you can.

@Snoopy11 I'm going to do it but I'm going to take my time and watch the videos before I jump in it and screw something up. And then again im going to try to find someone who could do it for me.

Be better if you could find some one to do it with you. That way you get to learn.
