Turning point on a project?

Recommended Posts

ebinmaine

In our home workshop we've done three full frame off complete disassembly right down to the last nut bolt and washer restorations/builds.

We've been working on what I envisioned as my own version of a Big Wheel tractor for two and a half years or so now, off and on.

Recently we made a turning point on that project that I've noticed in the past, on other projects, is sort of a psychological boost for me.

The engine block now has paint.

In the sequence that Trina and I seem to have developed that's the point in the project where things begin to meld together towards reassembly.

What part of a project or restoration is your similar boost?

What's your turning point?

Definitely paint. After the paint is on things can start going back together.

Will be staring on a project here in the next week or two. I have all the parts that I know I will need gathered together so hopefully it will go smooth. Gonna shoot for a 1 month turn around.

Yep, It seems easy to a lot of parts blasted and primed.

But a working transmission is the first point, because that means a "roller" is not far off.

Then a running/painted engine is surely a next big step.

Typically a full roller… but then there’s my dump truck build that got rolling and halted.

Once all the machining is done and all the purchased items have arrived (in this day & age with supply chain issues once they are ALL in my hands - that is a milestone).

I guess I'm in the - parts cleaned/blasted and the big pieces with paint, and I sorta get the ole proverbial "kick in the butt"

A Turning Point haiku…

When fire’s in the hole

And she shifts and rolls and steers

Project turning point

Like Sylvia and no ‘ku…

I’m getting ready to hear some fire breathing horsepowers soon.  It’ll be a turning point indeed!

I haven't done a full resto, and may never. The closest I have to a show tractor is my 417-8, and that's only because it was in good to excellent condition when I got it.

I have some others that have come in various conditions, some were just for parts. Mongo was built more because I had all these parts lying around and they take up less space as a whole

I get excited when I can coax life from an engine that's been sitting idle for any length of time. getting the fuel/carb straightened out, cleaning and di-greasing contacts and grounds, finding the reason the PO gave up. sometimes it's soooo simple.

Hearing the first stuttering coughs from a machine. hearing it smooth out (hopefully without excess smoke from the exhaust!). Letting it run and warm up to operating temp....

Definitely paint. Or sometimes when an old rust bucket cranks and shocks me at how nice it runs...

Turning point, that's easy.

It's when you've disassembled, cleaned, painted, reassembled, almost get ready to try using it, and you notice a couple of leftover parts...

"Bonus parts".

Easy fix. Put those towards the next build.
