Is IH 2150 red suitable for 70's vintage WH's?

Seems that I saw a post where someone was using IH 2150 red on their WH. I have some of it from Farmall & red Cub Cadets and would be nice to use it on my GT14. Is it close enough to use or would I be better just buying the correct color which is ?

Use if good quality paint. The Ponds wanted their color as close to IH red as possible. The tractor in my avatar is original in 64   I use Rustoleum Regal Red which can be hard to find now days.

Apparently over the years The horses would have slight changes, probably from changing suppliers, so the general consensus is pretty much if its red use it! Not having taken a survey on most popular brand, I get the strong impression that Rustoleum in regal red and sunrise red would likely come out as the most used. And it is good paint and is reasonably priced, in rattle cans and qts,  and readily availiable....

On big jobs back when I could see to paint I bought 2150 by the gallon from the dealer and it was a very good quality paint. Even their rattle cans were pretty good. but I just use it for small pieces or touch up. The paint in a rattle can has to be so thin to get out the nozzle. I have never been a fan of it but I see a lot of people use it for a resto that don't have a compressor and paint gun. Wllell I think it is settled, I'll just use IH 2150 and be done with it. Thanks to those who responded.

last one i painted i told my paint guy IH red and it turned out a little dark . he told me there 2 diff ih reds . new and the old

The later IH red is a little lighter in color.

Find some red paint. Apply it to your tractor. If it looks good and you like it, that's Wheel Horse Red.

 

If you ever go to the annual Wheel Horse Collectors Club show, it's a sea of red with not many tractors being exactly the same color. But they are all Wheel Horse, they are all red, and that my friend is "Wheel Horse Red".

So long as you like it- that is what matters. I've got faded "pinkie" mid 90s machines, almost brown original paint on old barn horses, and seen everything from fire engine red to almost burgundy. There are plenty of folks who claim to know exactly what WH red actually is. Truth is, no one does. It changed many times over the years, and no one kept up with it.

 

I personally agree with the masses: Rustoleum Regal red is hard to beat on old or new machines.

I can’t remember the exact number of cans… but the cost was probably 5 or 6 dollars a can .

I tend to buy more than I need because I don’t want to run out mid job.
