Winter fun - Project “Freedom” 440cc 2 Stroke 1054 Snowmotractor

Recommended Posts

Pullstart

I settled for a 2.65” pulley.  2.36 times faster.  It’ll be here Monday.  Might still machine the drive clutch a bit for a larger final diameter up front.

The drive clutch has marks showing about 4” final drive.  Plenty of room for improvement there too!

The 4in dia. wear mark on the clutch.

Is that because of the length of the belt or is that the last place the clutch gap is 5/8" when fully engaged?

yes.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

I pretty much placed the engine based on the belt I found.  I closed the pulley and pulled it as tight as I could and then moved it another 1/2” or so.

Mrs. P set me up an Instagram account.  Pullstart.Stables  A guy told me (and I argued for a bit with him) about a high idle switch.  I’ll have to dig into that.

I’d sure love to find this thing idling well… and performing good too!

Just got done catching up on this project over on your YouTube channel. That thing is wicked awesome. And the speed in which you have gotten it all put together amazes me. If you ever get bored you're welcome to come to Oklahoma and help get the two seater knocked out

Or maybe @ebinmaine could use some help getting Colossus built :ychain::ROTF:

Is it still idling a bit high?

It hasn’t started or moved since maiden voyage day.  I’ve got to figure out what that switch does…

Isn't that a throttle safety swith?

I believe you Mike.  I’m not saying the other guy is wrong, I’m just saying your video has a better explanation.  I got it running with no wiring but a kill (key) switch.  Once I put the throttle extension on, I had an idle issue.

I didn't know but the video would help the masses follow along as well.

Good news / bad news.  Bad news first.  I ordered a pulley for the wrong sized input shaft.  Doh!  Good news.  A 3 speed 606 pulley is much smaller than what I have in there now.  It’s for a 4L belt and I’m running a 5L.  I hope I don’t tear it up.

I pulled the idler off a mid 60’s mid mount mule drive.  It will mount on the frame in front of the trans pulley and create a ton of positive surface area.

Excellent idea.

I'll be doing that on my Big Wheel Tractor.

Got the notion from someone else on Redsquare.  I saved the YT channel video of how one person set it up.

That will work for proof of concept to let you know if the size is what you want. Not much surface contact area with a 5L belt in a 4L pulley, probably won't take much snow to make it slip.

This is a stock 3 speed pulley off a 606.

This is a 2.65” pulley (of the wrong shaft size).  A replacement will arrive tomorrow.

I think your going to destroy belts with that much HP and that small pulley just not enough area on the pulley. Wallfish posted a pulley layout on the Colossus Project ( can't call it a build ) . You need to move the engine an inch or so to the right and add a jackshaft with the spring loaded pulley from the snowmobile. The finish gearing with larger pulleys to the transmission.

Wall fish's drawing on page #5 post #111.

I’m well aware of the possibility for destroying a belt, but thanks for your concern!  Stay tuned for carnage details!

The rear pulley works great!  I just need to take up some more slack so the clutch will grab!  :banana-wrench:
