Those aren't old NJ ax heads these are

We were looking at this, do you think these handles were cut shorter at some point.  Comparing to some other photos

Those aren't the handles, but rather the jaws.  The handles are the skinny ones, of which one is broken.  No, not cut down, at least not that I see any evidence of.

 

Did you find those tomahawks?

No but they were found in my area.

Look at some pics of black smith tongs.  They should have longer handles. 

  I know a guy who black smiths I am going show him the picture.

I can only go by what Cas tells me but I have seen the photos of tools with longer handles.

That's why I think they might have been cut off, I am no expert but I think they are flipped the other way.  Curved in part holds the metal and you can do your twists or whatever.  

I don't know, it's interesting I will show him.  Now I am curious

Those were probably used for scroll work.They are usually shorter. I have seen them before from that period the only major difference was that they were square on the inside or only slightly rounded there.
