Safety switch bypass.

So my 310-8 is having another random fit of not starting. I think it’s caused by one of the safety switches so I am going to try to temporarily bypass them individually to single out whichever one is the problem causer. Now my question is how do I exactly go about bypassing them? Do I just unplug them? Do I have to connect the wires with a paper clip or something? I never really understood anything electrical on any of my tractors. Can’t exactly put a wrench to electricity.

And by not starting I mean it doesn’t even crank. I turn the key and nothing. If I jiggle the clutch or PTO it’ll kinda half crank for a second so I’m thinking it’s a safety of some sort

We strongly discourage elimination of any safety switch.  It sounds more like a bad battery or an electrical connection that is corroded or needs tightening. Depending on the year of your 310 there may be an Oil Centre switch which prevents the starter from turning if the oil is too low, check the oil.

Here is a wiring diagram of the start circuit and the components in it.

@953 nut That was pretty much the first thought I had checking connections and the battery. Neither seem to be the issue. My idea was to temporarily bypass safeties one by one in order to single out whatever one needs replacing. Not necessarily looking to remove them all together.

The switches have to be closed (on) in order for things to work. I would put together a jumper wire with male ends to splice the wires together for testing.

I believe that both the clutch and brake switches are in the starter solenoid circuit.  Good place to start looking.  In the case of the pto safety switch, take a look at the pto lever bushings.  Excess play there can prevent the safety switch from being tripped.   

 

One of the trouble shooting tools I made was a short piece of wire with male flat connectors crimped on each end.  I unplug the wires from the switch and connect them with the jumper I made.

So I determined it’s the clutch safety. I’ll have to order a replacement, and in the meantime I might as well figure out why my parking brake doesn’t work. Thanks for your help everybody

If the the brake is tighten up too much the parking brake won't catch.  All tighten does is move the brake pedal won't give anymore brakes.
