Don Seemed like through the 70s, 80s and early 90s few companies made any real effort to make a decent deck. Deeres were too thin, wheel horse tended to crack ar the roller bar or fold up from strikes, Simplicity...made no effort, snapper GTs were not bad, Kubota decks cracked and fell apart, ropers were decent but rusted fast
RED-Z06 2,221 #11 Posted January 24, 2022 Then the 425/445/455, 325, 345, 355...etc models, beefy decks

T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #13 Posted January 24, 2022 I didn't have a 420, but I had a 400 and a 430 in the past. Both were beasts. I also had a 445 and a X720 which are decedents of the 400 line. A bit of John Deere 400 series history. 400_series_Garden_Tractors-64276.pdf 1 1
RED-Z06 2,221 #14 Posted February 4, 2022 Got the engine ready to hoist out today, things i need to do while its out... Replace governor spacer Inspect why the starter sounds so awful Adjust valve lash Inspect intake for leaks (prevention) Pull heads and Inspect valve seats/bores. Change oil and filter
RED-Z06 2,221 #15 Posted February 9, 2022 Engine is out, start to finish it was out in about 20 minutes, got it torn down this afternoon, plastic spacer came off too easy, i heated the steel new one, cleaned all the mating surfaces and put it on..a few hammer strikes it was seated in. Cleaned my balls up, and my cup..😐, and assembled it back, ensuring the hole was at 3oclock. Also chanced the flywheel side crank seal. Valve lash is all over, ill set it tomorrow..one valve has no lash at all. The only problem i encountered is, it ate a screw at some point, right side piston took a beating but looks superficial. Never did like the front belt routing that powers the mower deck though, a common problem with longitudinal engine placement. Enjoy it!

This one has a shaft driven deck off the front pto, Twin belts down to a pulley on a shaft. The 316/318 had the mule drive similar to wheel horse with twisted belts

Thanks Also just noticed the separate rear wheel brake discs (you didn't post a right side image so I didn't see the pedals ). RED-Z06 2,221 #22 Posted February 24, 2022 Tractor itself is nearly complete...engine runs like a top. Deck is...very rough, ive got it stripped down bare, refinished the spindles, brackets, temsioner, pulleys, stripped the hardware, new gauge wheels...waiting on supplies for the shell itself
RED-Z06 2,221 #24 Posted December 2, 2022 Well, the engine laid down after 45 minutes of mowing, seller didnt disclose the engine had a loose valve seat and the block was ruined, so...10 months later i tracked down a used correct 1- 7/16" pto engine and after welding up the broken starter mounts...it purrs. Still have to yank it back out and replace the governor spider..but at last it lives
