Snoopy11 5,714 #1 Posted January 23, 2022 Engine had broken rod, ...after cleaning aluminum off... crank journal was proper spec for GX390 base (rod changed to ARC GX390)... had partially clogged carburetor (among other fueling issues). Valves are set .006 intake --.008 exhaust. Had a hard time finding valve lash settings after removing cam for engine repair. Called around... and did A LOT of research... and finally came to the above setting, which is the same for my DUROMAX 457... Only other modification, removed sole balance gear... (only had 1 in this particular engine). Everything cleaned, de-carboned. I expected a tiny bit of spoke on startup... as everything was lubricated with molly lube, including rings which were re-gapped. I was told that it might be a 35 year old model... I think... it is less than that... but the label/serial does not say. REGARDLESS... it is back in business. Work I put into it probably out-values the generator... Type code stamped into the valve cover should revile manufacture date on engines built after '65. From B&S site The engine's code number indicates the exact date it was manufactured. This system provides an easy way to determine the age of your small engine. The following is an example of interpreting the date for the code number 99011556: The first two digits (99) denote the year of manufacture. In this case it is 1999. The next two digits (01) are the month of the year, which is January. The following two digits (15) are the day of the month. In this case the 15th. I take a side look at the valve cover... that I took off and cleaned-up (never noticing the numbers on it...) AND... drum-roll... 030121 January, 21st... 2003... VERY INTERESTING!!! Intake valve was spring loaded and opened by suction only on the intake stroke. The exhaust valve operated with a push rod and rocker arm. Lee1977 6,670 #8 Posted January 27, 2022 Looks just like my Generac 5500 that I bought in Jan of 02. We had a big ice storm covered most of North and South Carolina. We were out of power for a week. Mine set for a bunch of years I had to plug an electric drill into it and turn it by hand to get it working. I bought a corded pole saw for HF 5 years ago I have the generator tied down on a wagon. The Brigg book is for models 110000, 120000, 200000, 210000.
