While you have the fender and fuel tank off, it's a good idea to clean out the cooling fins on the hydro. Just a little degreaser and a water hose usually works fine.

Looks like a solid machine!

On mine, the crud accumulates more underneath the pump on top of the gearbox, and it's hard to get to with the right side rear wheel on.

Thats a good thing. My Shaker plate broke the engine tins around the coil and elsewhere I even had to reinforce the rear transmission tunnel mounts to give the seat something to bolt to. Old bed frames are just right for the job

mine are so bad that you can  just pick the engine off the frame no rubber left at all . go to apply the pto and motor moves sideways

got the new motor mounts installed ' pulled the carb apart and cleaned it up . carb looked great inside the throttle shaft does have some slop . adjusted the valves , pulled flywheel cover i like to mark the timeing mark with white paint marker so when i check timing easy to see with timing light . fuel pump gasket was leaking replaced gasket and looks like someone in past installed a new fuel pump it plastic thought theses were aluminum pumps . it shoots fuel moving the lever which is good . need a warmer day above freezing to get this outside to degrease it and power wash it off good . wiring is a mess it all cobbled up .

the green thing sitting next to it may go away once i start using this for a mower 20220130_141405.jpg.06fd38f553ae524d98bfd996d457e0ad.jpg20220130_141417.jpg.bbb67aecad7156d96f602ff9aedb9064.jpg20220130_141433.jpg.3946135727226979d60fd6c3ea7b3d4d.jpg

Just be careful. If you put another horse in the shed, they tend to kick the crap out of green stuff they can't eat...

having the motor mounts bad it shock hell out of this and it did break the ignition coil mount on flywheel housing . took the mount off and had dime sized hole welded it up and should be good now  not pretty but never see it once it painted and the bracket bolted back on . almost to a standstill for now waiting for a warmer day to get this outside to degrease it and get some of the sheet metal sandblasted

had a nice day today got this out and got the 30 plus years of crud off this the fins in the hydro packed tight with grass and crud . need to get the rear end oil and filter and engine oil changed and put some gas to it and should fire up . got the points and installed check valve between carb and fuel pump hope this will make this start every time . won't let gas bleed back from carb.

check valve between carb and fuel pump

I've been pondering why 'drainback' is a problem.

The fuel pumps for the Kohler have check valves in them!  Two in fact.

If there's a problem with drainback, then there must be a problem that the check valves in the pump aren't functioning properly.

i seen on here awhile back someone had issues  before I got this tractor and another member here told me about theses check valves and i got 2 off amazon and put one on this and yes there is suppose to be check valves in pump . seen on here also someone installing primer bulb from outboard to prime it every time they started it so it wouldn't crank long

I have the primer bulbs on both my machines.  Works great.  There are check valves in the primer bulbs for certain, two of them, just like in the fuel pumps.

did some paint work today got the hood front rims and the front frame blasted today went to menards and bought some regal red and clear coat top coat . this going to be a rattle can job . to busy at work in body shop to have it sprayed . rear half the sheet metal decent will buff it out .

never tried to clear coat paint from a rattle can before . just doing the top of hood hope it turns out good . thought someone on here said to spray it on while your base coat still tacky but also seen where it may cause base coat to wrinkle . can says to lightly sand before apply the clear

I didn't see where any one answered your question about the bar in the transmission mount. That's used to mount a sickle bar mower.

thanks was wondering what that was for . don't know any history on this tractor . when I bought it I say my wife bought if for my Christmas year before last . was tractor only no attachments . have a 48 inch deck from my c120 I am putting on it and a SS 42 inch snow blower this next winter .

talked to the paint rep at work today he says he wouldn't recommend clear coating over this rust oleum  enamel  in the rattle can he says it will lift the base coat and wrinkle it guess I am not clearing the paint now . hope to have painted by end of next week . look's to be warm weather here 60's by this weekend

I myself would do a test.  Spray something that you don't care about, let it cure for a couple weeks, spray the clear coat and see what happens.

On the 312 I restored I used Rustoleum Regal Red and Hardener thru a spray gun. But small tins were rattle can. Wet sanded and clear coated the tins with rattle can clear. Most of the tins had 2-3 weeks drying before clear coating.

drying

That's one of the things that's super important.  Even spraying a second coat before the first coat is fully cured will cause it to lift and wrinkle.

I think the can says second coat BEFORE 20 minutes or AFTER 72 hours... but I've even had the lifting issue waiting  72 hours.  So I now make sure to add successive coats before the 20 minute timer is up.

worked on this some this afternoon got the engine tins back on and fuel line ran and hooked up . started draining the oil in trans and engine will be setting now till latter this week till i can get back on it need to get the headlights back in the hood I fabed a bracket up to hold the headlights in the bucket tight will get a pic of it when they are installed .

i just have the seat pan setting on it have to adjust the trans it creeps a little when idling in neutral they don't have much room thru the hole in seat pan to adjust it . need to get some of that weather strip to put between hood and steering stand to close the gap there in second pic

need to order the hood decals also i haven't done that yet
