Huntemcd 239 #1 Posted January 22, 2022 Hi guys I started rebuilding a kohler k91. I installed an nos Kohler camshaft because the points rod doesn’t come out close to the points at all. I bought an nos kohler push rod that is supposed to be for a k91 because it didn’t have one when I got it. So why is it so short? Also how do I tell if the cam and crank is in time. I see the dot on the cam but not one on the crank. Thanks.
wallfish 17,014 #2 Posted January 22, 2022 There's a dot mark on the crank too, you just need to locate it. I'm curious why the push rod would be so short too so can you post a pic of it inserted all the way into the hole?

Only mark I can find on the crank is a little nubbin that lines up with the dot on the cam. I didn’t find an actual dot mark. This morning I pulled the push rod out of a 12 horse and it works now. So I have no idea what the points rod is I bought. It was brand new in a kohler bag and it’s about a quarter inch shorter than the 12 horse one.
pfrederi 17,741 #4 Posted January 22, 2022 There are at least two different Kohler push rods. you need to look up your engine spec# and get the correct part#

If you hover your pointer over the BROWSE button on the top left under the horse's head a drop down will appear. Click on manuals. Then to the right you will see a list. Under engine manuals click Kohler and find the manual you want. The manual will help you. I could post it but "teach a man to fish" is better because you can find anything else you might need in the future 2

I’ll have to post some pics and the manual I have looks like it shows a nub but it’s hard to tell.

prondzy 3,881 #9 Posted January 23, 2022 You won't find a drilled dot in the crank for a mark. It is a line cast into the rough casting on the crank.
