K-181s oil leak

Recommended Posts

I Have a oil leak at the governor.Does this look like a crack or do you think this may be a worn bushing ?

The motor runs great otherwise. It drips at a pretty good clip once it’s warmed up.thx

Given that its heavy on the arm id go with bushing...do you feel much wobble in the shaft?

No wobble at all.I’ll take it apart tomorrow to get a better look.

Make sure your crankcase breather is not blocked and is on correctly. There is no seal on that gov shaft. There isn't usually a lot of oil there. Could be excess crankcase pressure forcing the oil out.

Thanks I’ll take a look at that as well.Got this one at a good price.Only thing I’ve done so far is a carb cleaning / refurb and head gasket.

Hmm no wobble then the bushing shouldn't be the problem, is the oil fresh?  If its contaminated with fuel it can thin out and seep

There is no bushing in a K181 governor

#25 is a spacer.

#3 is the governor shaft

I'm with Squonk. Typically it's going to be crank case pressure pushing oil out. There's no "bushing" or seal there but oil needs to be pushed out through that hole for leaking. Otherwise it just drips back down to the pan. Clogged breather or not installed properly. Or excessive blow by on the rings.

Also looks to be overfilled if that much oil is pushing out. Check the level without screwing the dipstick plug into the case.

Right on the money, Squonk n Wallfish.

Pulled the breather and found this!

I had something similar on an 854 I purchased a few years ago. Seller said it was a smoker. I asked how bad and he said not too bad it was his go to tractor. When I received the tractor it did not smoke but after running it a few minutes oil was coming from the governor just like yours. Some PO had filled the vent in the cover with Bondo and painted over it.

Imagine putting that much effort into creating a problem 🤣

Worst ive seen is a guy made an adapter and put a small carb onto an 18hp tecumseh single...said it had no power, he was definitely right, kept choking out over about 2500 rpms or if the governor reacted at all.  He had the old carb, i put it back on it ran fine...no idea why he did what he did

Given the compression of a K181, I'm suprised there isn't oil coming out of the points too.

Had a similar issue with a Vanguard. It blew every seal on it out at once. You got lucky!

Im guessing the PO pulled the motor for this reason. This was the only issue other than needing a good carb cleaning and just general maintenance stuff. The piston is tight and no scoring in the cylinder.

.Cant  complain about the 40 bucks spent for it.

The vent plate will not allow air out.

Where is the air supposed to go out ?… that dime sized hole ?

Yes. That is a spring steel tab that will release pressure if you turn it around so what you see is inside.

Oh , so the vent plate was turned the wrong way ?

So air pushes up through the dime sized hole from the side that has the orange rubber thing around the threaded sleeve/ rod(or whatever)? And when you reinstall, the dime sized hole will be towards the inside of the engine, right ?

So the spring steel tab is not letting air by ?
The reason I am so curious is when I was doing a little maintenance/ refreshing on my 16 hp twin Briggs on my Work Horse, I had the valve covers off, and noticed a dime sized hole in each like that. The holes were blocked by what looked and felt like Formica material(maybe it was steel) I wondered if air would pass through there so I pushed on the Formica in the holes and it felt a little springy, just not much.

On the top of both the valve covers was another hole where two rubber hoses go up to the air filter box.

I guess you can’t get it wrong on the Briggs twin because they will only fit one way.

Sound like I am getting it now ?

I don't know about the brig's but you are correct on the Kohler.

I went back to the first pic on this thread.

I see now…

flip the vent plate over, then the pan shaped valve cover goes on over it.

Technically, that's called a 'reed valve'.

It allows crakcase pressure out, but won't let air back in.
