Maybe you should do a little research on why your engine is backfiring... as... this isn't the first time that this issue has been encountered on the Square. Don Backfiring is not and has never been a concern, the WH dealer i worked for, Kohler Magnum Engines usually backfired new when hot, unless you cooled them a bit, up until the final editions with the Command, the fuel solenoid ended the popping. But even my big Water Cooled Kawi will pop if i shut it off hot at higher speeds sometimes.

Perhaps gradually lowering the throttle instead of shutting it off at full throttle? That severe backfiring can damage valves... among other things... which would be my only concern. And, there are other causes of backfiring, which I and other members have already mentioned. Don Edited January 23, 2022 by Snoopy11

Don Backfiring isnt going to damage valves, trust me, the backfire is gas being pulled through the engine, no spark, it passes into the muffler..but there is little to no oxygen in the muffler so it cant ignite..but the fuel does become superheated. If the explosion happens after or as the engine stops, then air traveled up the exhaust and upon contacting the superheated fuel, instantly ignites (in the muffler)..if it does it as the engine is winding down, then the air being drawn through the engine is enough to allow limited external combustion...the valves never come into play, its the heat in the muffler and fuel being present in the muffler. When i do a plug read, when anyone does a plug read, you don't want to idle the engine, it can skew the plug read.

Snoopy11 5,714 #60 Posted January 23, 2022 My last statement, as it is weighing on me for the sake of the forum and future viewers of this thread who come here, and have engine concerns. What I want future viewers of this thread to understand... more so than anything else... is what is seen in that video is not normal, or acceptable per professional engine standards. It is not good to allow your engine to knock. It is not good to allow your engine to backfire. AND under normal circumstances, exhaust glowing is not normal. This thread is about an individual's choice of what they are satisfied with. I'm out. Don

The backfiring, was by my doing, I can make it do that or not do it, much like my profile picture, i can cause that at most any time...or prevent it, it doesnt hurt anything and it doesn't bother me...I do normally idle down a few seconds..and no backfire. The M12...not sure at any point i insinuated it was "normal"...but some engines are noisy and live long lives...you seem to have some kind of superiority complex though and seem to be out to disprove or discredit me and I truly wish you the best of luck with that, my work history is flawless, my reputation is flawless, this isnt a high end rebuild orca customer rebuild, its not a flip or racing mower or a puller...its something I did in my spare time on a scrap mower ,because i was bored.
