12" Dash cam mirror w/good REAR view suggestions??

Recommended Posts

pacer

So I get a "new" clean fairly low mileage 2011 4 door Tundra with some after market touches, one of which is pretty heavily tinted windows - especially rear glass. That, combined with the 3 head rest in rear seat make the inside rear view mirror VERY limited.

So I have been looking at the MANY choices of the dash cams, with emphasis on their rear cams out there trying to figure out one that has the best rear camera. While all the other bells/whistles will be nice, the rear cam is my priority, and my brain is about scrambled trying to make a choice. Some of the leaders in the ratings are: Wolf Box (seemingly #1) Akaso, Autovox, Carchet, etc etc. Most of these are in the $150ish range and thats OK.

So ... any you guys got one that you could comment on??

Can't help ya my 2018 Tundra has one from factory very helpful though. I would rely on ratings from owners, seems to work for me. Great truck by the way, have owned Toyotas since 1976 no regrets. Bob

Where does the rear camera mount?  on top of the cab I guess?

That is one of the aspects which I have to also consider.... Basically, mount it anywhere you want, or rather where you CAN. My preference would be on/near the rear glass giving more viewing area. However, I dont readily see a mount point there - with out some modification (drill hole/s?) Second most favorable spot is on/near license plate which I can see 2-3 methods for mount there. Virtually all the rear cameras SAY? they are waterproof, but from reading some comments - sometimes that aint so! This contradiction along with several other ..... points of interest? Glare is probably the most gripe .... along with many more, and which throwing them all in a pile make choosing one brand..... UGH!!

I got this camera separately for a friend's truck and it works good. It has an adjustable up/down pivot, no holes to drill. camera  He bought an aftermarket radio/head unit and it was easy to wire the camera into the head unit. This adapter kit will put the radio/head unit of your choice into your truck with a factory installed appearance. Make sure the head unit you choose is camera compatible.

WHX??

Another thing to consider is mounting the camera where you can see the hitch and be able to drop right on the ball when hooking up. Sure does beat jumping in and out 10 times to see you are a mile off.

That's how mine was on my old truck. I bought the camera separately from the radio and used an adapter kit on the radio:handgestures-thumbupright:

Somewhat protected in there too. :handgestures-thumbupright: Bonus you can keep an eye on the coupler for jumping off.

Yes and I also wired in a toggle switch instead of hooking it to reverse lights like the instructions recommended. :banana-wrench: I could flick the switch and see where I've been. Things flew by rather quickly going forward

Been sitting here last couple hrs narrowing the choices down and right now I'm at 2 -- Wolf box 12 and an Akaso 12. Relatively minor differences - which doesnt help in making a choice. I'm gonna sit on it a couple more hrs and decide before the end of day (Amazon will get it to me by Sat if I order before 7pm) As of now I'm leaning to the Akaso.......
