flhharley 14 #1 Posted January 20, 2022 I found a K161T on CL that I'm hoping will fit in my 1964 704. It currently has a newer electric start motor and want to get the old 7hp back in it. Can anyone tell me how to read the Spec number? What the numbers mean? The one I'm looking at buying is Model K161T Spec 281287J and Ser # 11137165. Non Wheel Horse spec engines most likely will not have the thrust rated output bearing the tractor requires. Best I can tell that motor is a 1981 year of manufacture. Bill I thought ALL Kohler engines had thrust bearings, but remember the 704 doesn’t have a side load PTO. flhharley 14 #5 Posted January 20, 2022 I just spoke to the gentleman selling the motor ad he said it came off a old wheel horse that he bought for parts. Didn't think it was original to the tractor he bought but runs perfect and doesn't smoke. Said the shaft is 3/4" and 2 1/2 " long. 2 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Newer models have a PTO bell on the side of the crank that push against the crankshaft bearings, our older 60’s models have a belt driven PTO system. You should be all set.
