K161T

I found a K161T on CL that I'm hoping will fit in my 1964 704. It currently has a newer electric start motor and want to get the old 7hp back in it. Can anyone tell me how to read the Spec number? What the numbers mean? The one I'm looking at buying is Model K161T Spec 281287J and Ser # 11137165.

Thank you

Greg

Greg:

Do you know what the engine was originally on?? Non Wheel Horse spec engines most likely will not have the thrust rated output bearing the tractor requires. Best I can tell that motor is a 1981 year of manufacture.

All I know it was a Kohler 7HP pull start.

I thought ALL Kohler engines had thrust bearings, but remember the 704 doesn’t have a side load PTO.  Greg, without knowing much.., I’d say verify the crankshaft output size and you should be golden.

I just spoke to the gentleman selling the motor ad he said it came off a old wheel horse that he bought for parts. Didn't think it was original to the tractor he bought but runs perfect and doesn't smoke. Said the shaft is 3/4" and 2 1/2 " long.

No worries, we’re glad to explain.  Newer models have a PTO bell on the side of the crank that push against the crankshaft bearings,  our older 60’s models have a belt driven PTO system.  You should be all set.

even if your current pulley is 1” or larger, you can get a sleeve and extended keyway to make it work.

Great! Thank you. I'm going to go hear it run and buy it, put it on the shelf until I'm ready. Thanks everyone for all your help
