Warms my heart to see that the legacy left to me continues proudly onto the newest generation. My oldest grandson Gabriel at work building a stand for the Whirligig . Already moved up to father's bench which was my first bench built here in 1983. The little bench next to it was also built here in in 1986 for his father. The hand plane was built  by his father when he was a teenager working on that same bench. At left of bench, on wheels it is my fathers journeyman's tool box.

Absolutely great stuff, there, and I share your delight to be part of the passing on of knowledge and seeing the pleasure new skills can bring.

Spent a chunk of this morning in the shop with my oldest grandson on our third or fourth joint project. His new favorite tool is the drill press to make wheels with a hole saw. He'd have made 50 of them if I'd left him to it (we only needed 10 for the tanker truck he designed).

Thank you. Screen time very restricted in their household. No regular TV whatsoever, only very carefully chosen programs from streaming services at specified times. No computer screen unless constantly supervised and absolutely no phones.

LOL. There just seems to me a monopoly on green tractors where ever you go. We may be an odd minority.

This warms my heart seeing this. If woodworking does not become his vocation for some reason at least he will learn the skills to be able to make repairs to his own property someday. When I was 13 in 1971 I started riding around with a neighbor that was a plumber. My dad told me to walk to his house and ask him if I could have a job being his helper after school and on weekends. I thought to myself that I was too young to be working but 51 years later still engaged in the same trade, but fortunately able to pick the jobs I want. Been a long road but well worth it.    Thank You Cas for the pictures and keep them coming if possible.      Forgot to add my pay rate back then. $ 10.00 per week.

I noticed the Home Depot Kid's orange apron hanging on the wall. I started taking my oldest grandson to the Home Depot kids workshop when he was six. He loved it. But he will never have the skills that somehow have been passed down through your family genes.

Gabriel just turned 10. They also go to the Home Depot workshops all the time and just love it.

 

Your grandson can have great skills if he likes it and has aptitude towards it. Some of the most talented woodworkers I know , never did it for a living or had anyone in the family that did it. Granted that having it in the family, there is an advantage since the exposure and influence is constant, and instruction is at hand. However anyone can learn, specially young children. Nurture it if he likes it and expose him to others work. Get him tools and encourage him. You will be surprised how talented he becomes. I would love nothing more to have him and other kids that age close to me, that I could teach. It would essentially complete my life.

We teach our children to love them all regardless of differences. However when it is necessary they will represent their own.
