lynnmor 7,302 #26 Posted January 17, 2022 The belt in the larger pulley can indeed add to clutch or belt slipping, since more work is being called for.
roadapples 6,983 #27 Posted January 17, 2022 The flat disc on the pulley/bell that goes against the clutch on my 520 was cupped. Only the outer edge, about a 1/2" was making contact. I tried sanding it on flat surface but was getting nowhere. Took it to local machinist and he turned it like you do a brake rotor. Now I've got full contact. Hadn't heard of this before even after being here on Red square for 7 years....

TonyBer 71 #29 Posted January 17, 2022 Guys....thank you all...once again what a phenomenal forum and so welcoming to people like me just learning. I was able to cut a few more threads on PTO clutch adjustment rod to allow a few more turns and it solved the problem 100%. I also switched the snow blower to the outside smaller pulley. She is throwing snow 20 - 30 feet beautifully. I also now have the knowledge and resources if I have to address the clutch plate replacement. I'm happy tonight...just finished the driveway! Have a great night!!! 2
TonyBer 71 #30 Posted January 17, 2022 3 hours ago, Ed Kennell said: Adding a few more threads fixed it It now engages perfectly and throws strong in any depth. Funny thing though is the rod is flanged about 1" after the thread where the spring hooks on so I could only add a few but it worked perfectly. Looking at the joint line of the clutch plate/lining, The lining appears to be pretty thick and may be OK. The belt should be on the outer pulley to make the auger spin at the correct RPM. That is not causing the belt to slip though. The adjustment rod is maxed out and could be allowing the clutch to slip. I would run a die on there and make another inch of threads. What really jumps out at me is the lack of tension on the tensioner spring. Most of the coils are closed and not applying any tension to the belt. That spring should be shorter and streched more. Ed Kennell 38,036 #31 Posted January 17, 2022 Great, glad it's working. I have a feeling your steering tower has moved forward causing the rod to be too long. Keep an eye on the tower to see if it is moving.
8ntruck 6,991 #32 Posted January 18, 2022 The fact that you had to add a few more threads to the pto rod says that you have some wear in the linkage that is pulling on the rod. Sounds like you fixed the symptoms, but not the cause. Last summer, the pto on my 14-8 started slipping while I was mowing. Turns out the c clip on the stub shaft on the cone had failed and came out of its groove. The arch bar could not apply pressure to the pto. While I was in there, I checked the holes in the triangular plate and found some wear in them. The bushings on the pto handle were ok, as was the pivot point between the rod and lever on the handle. Wear at all of these pivot points can add up to not enough pressure to run the pto. I suspect you will find wear in these points on your machine. But, you are up and running so inspection of your pto linkage can wait until warm weather. Good luck and have fun.
Jeff-C175 7,199 #33 Posted January 18, 2022 (edited) Clutch slippage would cause the PTO bell to heat up pretty good... and that's probably why the shiny new coat of paint is damaged? YEAH, SEE BELOW. As Emily Latella would say; " NEVER MIND! " Edited January 18, 2022 by Jeff-C175

I see your point....adding threads to fix had to come from some other breakdown (steering tower moving forward as per another contributor, linkage, or clutch plate). I'll get further into it in the warmer spring time. I don't think this really risks any further damage, right? Thanks!
