jonw440 187 #1 Posted January 17, 2022 (edited) 1993 314-8 with 356hrs+ (as hour meter is broken) This fall I added some Seafoam and Marvel Mystery oil to the gas tank per instructions. I have not used the tractor until 3 weeks ago and noticed on start up there was more smoke at start up then usual. I am hoping its just the carbon burning off as I have NOT removed the head to decarboned the head or piston. It runs great but what would be my next step? SylvanLakeWH 25,557 #2 Posted January 17, 2022 (edited) It’s gonna smoke a bit if you put MMO in the gas… especially on first start if it sat… Does it clear up and run normal when warmed up without a lot of smoke? Does it smoke just at startup or at any other time? After engine is warm, if you shut down engine and start it back up, does it smoke? May be a bit of carbon on the cylinder wall/piston... and the treatments you used actually cleaned all of it off, leading to more smoke. May we have pictures or video of the smoke? kpinnc 12,028 #10 Posted January 17, 2022 (edited) Seafoam will definitely make smoke, but only if you put a lot in the fuel. MMO will smoke no matter how much is there. Jeff-C175 7,202 #14 Posted January 17, 2022 Did you pour the SF and MMO into the fuel tank with the fuel already in the tank, or did you shake it up to mix it in a container and then pour it into the tank? I wouldn't discount that it's possible the stuff stratified and the bottom of the tank had a higher concentration of MMO and SF. 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
RED-Z06 2,221 #15 Posted January 17, 2022 Seafoam and MMO are very similar...their main active ingredients being pale oil and naptha. Being petroleum based you've added more or less an oily additive that has a different flash point than gas, its not going to combust when cold so it passes thru the exhaust..as smoke. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

RED-Z06 2,221 #22 Posted January 17, 2022 Seafoam and Chevron Complete fuel system cleaner are the only 2 fuel additives ive ever actually seen work. Lucas is the only oil additive id trust. My cousin bought a new 1990 Z71 Sierra in 1989..first oil change he tried a new product called Lucas OIL STABILIZER. He used it every oil change at 4000 miles with whatever cheap 10w30 was on sale. In 2007 at 389k miles the 700r4 gave out and while the engine still ran fine he figured he'd pull it too and freshen it up. So we pulled it, no sludge in the pan, no cam issues, mains looked great, rods looked great, pulked tge rings off #1 and #8...all rings in spec with so little ridge we didn't need to ream it. We put in a RV cam, new lifters and put it all back together as it was. Went another 80k miles until his son wrecked it. 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Seafoam is a mixture of: Pale Oil 60% (Pale oil is straight naphthenic mineral oil) Naphtha 25% (Same as mineral spirits paint thinner, only evaporates faster) IPA 15% Isopropanol (Isopropyl alcohol) If these cheap and readily available ingredients did anything to improve the performance of either oil or gasoline, don't you think the refineries would include them in their products? As of my last research on Seafoam, I haven't found any oil or gas companies that recommend putting them into their products. And the only reason we don't still have leaded gas or straight ethanol-free gas is due to government regulations, and when was the last time that worked for everyone? I'll get off my soapbox now. Darb1964 1,042 #25 Posted January 17, 2022 I use mm. All the time in my small engines, when I acquire a new to me tractor the first thing I do is add fresh gas and mm oil. Oil change also, there will be some smoke at start up, depending on the health of the engine it clears up after warming up. If it's been sitting for a long time I put a mixture of gas and mm down the sparke plug opening. Something a old timer showed me Years ago and I've done it ever since.
