417a smoking under load

Recommended Posts

David417a

Hey I bought a 417a smokes oil when motor is under load. Steep inclines or heavy grass. I bought it last summer as the 312 was getting in need of some love. The 417 has around 600 hrs. Before I rebuild upper end is there anything I should consider? Lower hours and very clean machine.

:twocents-02cents:           I bought a parts tractor with a Kohler twin that smoked a lot. Checked the oil and found it was overfilled, drained the oil and put in 1 1/2 Quarts and the smoke went away.

Have you changed the oil? As @953 nut said above, may be a simple fix…

Very clean looking tractor David.

Yes as 'Nut said check the oil level. And also that the crankcase breather is clean and operating as should. Check for excess oil in the air cleaner housing.

What’s odd about it? For a 30 year old tractor plus or minus looks good. The grill does need to get painted black. I did look at Lowe’s and Home Depot felt this would outlast any of them. Paid 600 for it, I would not hesitate to put 1000 into it. Plus shiny hubs😜

Sure looks like a twin in there Paul and was guessing twin as the muffler type. Clearly says 418 on the hood tho.

Can you get us a pic of the tag David?

Magnum 18 is a twin... really a KT17 with magneto ignition.

Ok i got it ... Thanks for the schooling you can tell I'm a early sixties guy!

Guessing this was a pressure lubed motor then?

Going back to his first post and steep inclines I was thinking about the lubrication issues a KT 17 would have had.

Yes pressure lubed just like the KT17 Series 2.  Some specs had oil filters WH went cheap no filter

Odd was not the word I should have used. That is a nice machine!

What stood out was that the nose was red, as was half of the dash tower. Of course I can't tell from the pics, but either someone did some repainting, or replaced some stuff or both.

Nothing wrong with it. Better to make efforts to preserve the mechanical over the cosmetic.

I would have paid what David did for it without question. He got himself a nice tractor to fix up or work with as-is. Good score!

Yeah, someone else here said it was only made one year, so I said , “Oh, y’all meant rare”.

The 418-A is a one year Tractor....yes that is correct.    Yes they are fairly rare....Nice score on the tractor...gotta paint the center front black on the hood though...looks very strage in red
