Elkskin's mower junkyard 1,117 #1 Posted January 16, 2022 I tried my best to fix the cart and well ended up asking for help. Buddy of mine said find a kitchen sink. So I went to the junkyard got 2 stainless steel sinks for 15 bucks lol. I cut one apart so we can dismantle it. And he got the axle out for me

Pullstart 62,809 #5 Posted January 17, 2022 The dude brazing… NEEDS torch goggles! I’ve been in the hospital for weld flash on my eyes, I know that stuff matters. You only get two eyes, once they’re reached you don’t have any. 2

Seriously I could never see with the goggles when brazing and the flash is nowhere near like welding. Still of course for eye protection. Now with the invention of all adjustable auto helmets no reason not to use one even for grinding flash. Nicest save we've seen on a tub for awhile Junkyard. ..
Jeff-C175 7,199 #7 Posted January 17, 2022 I didn't know you could weld stainless to plain steel?

They stick but they look like 5h1t. @kpinnc told me to " make them stick and grind off the ugly". Edited January 17, 2022 by Jeff-C175
kpinnc 11,935 #11 Posted January 17, 2022 (edited) I can only add this: tack up all the way around. Don't weld much at all in one spot at a time so as to not warp your sheet metal. It takes longer but will give a better result when finished. A little here, then the opposite side. Small drips of water can be used too if needed to cool your work. Not fire hose levels, just a little. And like Jeff said- grind off the ugly. Edited January 17, 2022 by kpinnc
Pullstart 62,809 #12 Posted January 17, 2022 After all the tack welds every inch or so, peen them down, then grind them flat, then repeat.

The higher the chrome and nickel content, the harder the welding. Why idea what kind of weld wire he was using? Flux core or MIG?

If there is a turd where a weld belongs, round off the edges and generously apply paint. There I fixed it! 1

Don’t know about stick welding stainless… I’ve never seen that. When I worked at schools maintenance for Mecklenburg County Schools I was a helper for the welder who frequently welded stainless steel kitchen equipment. He used a gas bottle, a gas “pedal” and I was thinking he used a Tungsten wire/ filler rod in one hand, and fed the wire to the weld while heating with the wand (for lack of correct term). I could swear he called it TIG welding… T- tungsten I- inert G- gas

peter lena 8,588 #25 Posted January 18, 2022 @Pullstart agree with you and others on the goggles ! my maintenance shop at work , was also a weld shop with , antiglare booth shielding every ware, ALWAYS WORE DARK GLASSES UNDER MY WELDING HELMET , PROTECTION AGAINST SIDE FLASHING. todays world is a casual thing while attempting any type of welding , glare protection , gloves, rough out leather jackets , you wear that for a reason. loosing your eyesight , and skin burn , should be avoidable . my experience, pete
