Gregor 4,847 #26 Posted January 17, 2022 I'm not sure what you wanted to see in a video, but here is one, such as it is. Push one button, it turns left. Push the other button, it turns right. Limit switches control the amount of travel. I have a joystick I could incorporate, but that would mean still more relays and wire. This poor tractor alraedy has enough relays and wire to choke a HORSE ! I think Caspers battery is getting a bit low. It's had quite a load put on it lately.

If a video is added from YouTube (preferred) editing the post it can be removed.

My other hobby is RC aircraft. Planes, helicopters, and even the dreaded DRONEs. Difference being I design my own, including the electronics. Flying anything with goggles in first person view is a blast. Now there are dozens of people who have built mowers with FPV built in. Think mowing your lawn from the couch with a remote control, with 360 degree video on your big screen TV. The older I get, the more alluring the idea is for me. I said all that to say this: you just solved one of the issues I was thinking about, the steering for a Wheel Horse.

Gregor 4,847 #32 Posted January 18, 2022 A question for the brainiacs. This is one of those things I could figure out through trial and error, but I thought maybe a smart person would already know. The steering, while it is satisfactory, could be quicker. My question is this. Above represents the present spool size on the winch. The cable of course wraps around this spool. If I were to increase the spool size like the bottom pic, would the steering be faster or slower? Would it be stronger or weaker? Would it take less or more power to turn? Thanks Greg

Thanks Greg When I start thinking about gear ratios I harken back to a mountain bike or road bike with multiple gears. One of my mountain bikes has three sprockets on the front and six or seven separate gears in the back. For your thought process I would equate the steering gear to the front and the winch spool to the rear sprocket. The smallest front and the largest back is a one-to-one ratio which is rock and stump climbing gear and extremely slow but extremely powerful. Road gear, so to speak, is the largest front and the smallest rear which is more like what you have. I don't know what your ratios are but let's say right now you have a winch spool that is 1/10 the size of the outer diameter of (the steering gear as it would appear whole.) If you double the size of the drum on the winch you should also increase the SPEED of the steering gear moving by roughly twice. I don't know if I could answer the question about being stronger or weaker. As for taking more power, yes. It should theoretically take twice the power but if you already have an Overkill of power that might not be an issue.

I'm thinking I might just order the above mentioned winch, eliminate my relays, problem solved, maybe. I can always find something to do with another winch. Gregor 4,847 #36 Posted January 18, 2022 I ordered a winch with wireless remote control, BUT.......... I forgot something. I still have to have my limit switches in line to control the amount of travel. Back to the drawing board.
Horse Newbie 7,159 #37 Posted January 18, 2022 Short answer… Larger spool = faster turn and more power to do it…
Gregor 4,847 #38 Posted January 18, 2022 Now I just have to figure out a good way to get a cable around this spool, connected to the spool at 2 points, wrapped in opposite directions. Actually, I would like to get rid of the cable all together, but that's another plan.

Gregor 4,847 #42 Posted January 18, 2022 The only thing is, I am going to have to dissect a winch, and find out what's in there, to see if I can do that. Just possible winches were not made for dissecting.

Pullstart 63,205 #44 Posted January 18, 2022 @Gregor on your limit switch power assisted steering diagram for @ebinmaine to chew on, would you attach the orbital piece via adjustable clutch tension of sorts? Otherwise, how would you positively let it go the direction of the shaft, but not have slop?

Thanks Greg Greg, Most of the work I've seen involves a traditional aircraft style radio providing inputs into a controller- much like you're doing with relays operating the load. Obviously a 5vdc signal can't drive much. The primary reason I haven't done much with this is because the two main options used are linear actuators moving mechanical controls on a non-modified machine, or using electric motors similar to wheelchair setups over a 24 volt system. Both types have pros and cons. Radios can be had for stupid cheap now. Less than $50 now for a decent 2.4Ghz transmitter and reciever. Programmability/ flexibility increases costs. Just like John Deere, names cost money here too. No FCC license needed for 2.4G either. Some of these are hobbyists, others are startups. There are a few off the shelf models out there, particularly slope mowers. There are dozens of forums out there too. It's a rabbit hole. Enter if you dare...
