I have limited room for a layout. I carved out a 9 X 5 foot space. A ping pong table happens to be 9 x 5 ft. So a recycled table from FB and a roll of ECO carpet from Lowes. 10 cars is the longest I can go.

New classic car dealership still under construction but today is opening day. Still waiting for the white belt and shoes. Checkered sport coat and slacks! :hilarious:

Newest addition: 1992 Deleware & Hudson. Never run before. Ran it enough to make sure it ran and the whistle worked. Got to get some oil and smoke fluid for it.

You'll have to raid Dawns jewellery box for a replacement. Be few small diamonds in there. :D

I could probably go down to the street corner and find a tiny piece of glass.

I got my first train set, HO scale, when I was 10 years old in 1979, then I really got in to HO scale as a teenager in the 80's. Now I've been in to G scale for almost 20 years. Great fun! and my webpage has a lot of modeling, and NY state railroad history:

I visited your above link, there is a lot to unpack there, really worthwhile for all the rail fans here.  I intend to get back to it when I have more time especially since I read briefly about Dad.

Yes. But somewhere along the line they must have changed the molds when they were made. I found a set at a flea market. They wouldn't stay locked together. I have 2 small buildings on my layout that come apart when the dog runs thru the room using these!

I found another set that actually locks together like I had as a kid so I built the dealership out of those. Look at the holes in these 2 pieces. The white piece has complete holes where the red one has holes with slots. The slotted holes are the ones that actually lock together.

It works. I set it up on the floor not that long ago for my nephew. I have a room full of old toys. Had about 20 Hess trucks new in boxes and every time he visits he takes one. I tell him he has to keep it in the box but he dosnt. They are all played with and who knows where the boxes are. I think I have 3 left. I don't mind he loves them.

I had some trains when I was younger, but never had the money to buy many.  Had a neighbor who had a layout that I remember as being about 8' x 12' but it may have been smaller, and he liked it when I came over and helped work on it with him.

I wanted to comment on the Hess trucks though... when I left my Ex in 2011, there were about 20 of these, new in boxes, in the attic. Wish I had just taken them - she of course didn't offer to give any of them to me.  We had been buying them for the kids for Christmas for years, and always bought 2 of each model - one to play with and one to stay new in the box as a collector's item. I remember my son's favorite being the one that had a race car that went up ramps into the box trailer, with windows on the trailer so you could see the car inside. Most of them had battery-powered lights of some kind or another. Cool stuff.

Since there's reference to "real" railroads in here, some memories come up.  Back in the early 1970's when I was in High School, we lived within earshot of this baby along part of its route, and I loved that sound:  https://www.blackriverrailroad.com/steam

Across the river in New Hope, PA, I often saw these in action:  https://www.newhoperailroad.com/

I've ridden on this one:  https://877trainride.com/rivertrain.htm

I grew up in rural Ohio, with a freight train track about 1/4 mile from the farmhouse.  I used to love hearing those trains. Today, I'm in Indiana with a track about 1/2 mile away. Just heard one go by about 30 minutes ago. They run through here several times a day, and bring up those old memories.
