Gregor 4,846 #1 Posted January 6, 2022 I have a ceiling fan in my garage. It has this controller that came with it. 5 different speeds. I want to run it in the winter, but even set at the lowest speed, it turns too fast, and creates a draft. Can the controller be swapped out for this rheostat type controller? Thanks Greg
Maxwell-8 4,276 #2 Posted January 6, 2022 I believe so, It is just two wires that are restricted in current. But have noticed electrical stuff can vary over the pond. We are going to install a ceiling fan in our shop as well. The ceiling is 19 feet high and in the winter all the heat raises up there. And then we are working in the cold. I noticed it when needing to do some work on the lighting. The higher I climbed up my ladder, the nicer it became. The fan will blow the hot air back down. in a variety of directions.
Gregor 4,846 #3 Posted January 6, 2022 (edited) I do know that not ALL electric AC motors can be variable speed. The motor has to be wired for this. The trouble is, I don't know if my prufyv28948098062yqesent controller has that wiring, or if it is in the fan. My present controller is NOT a simple rotary switch. I do know that not ALL electric AC motors can be variable speed. I guess I should say I THINK this anyway. Edited January 6, 2022 by Gregor
Pullstart 62,903 #4 Posted January 6, 2022 Can your fan be reversed? Will that help at all?
SylvanLakeWH 25,583 #5 Posted January 6, 2022 For winter use have air directed up so hot air is forced down walls with minimal draft… 1

squonk 41,130 #7 Posted January 6, 2022 (edited) Let's see a vid of it's lowest speed. It may not be designed for that switch in the first place . Or, Buy another fan that's reversible Edited January 6, 2022 by squonk

Jeff-C175 7,202 #10 Posted January 6, 2022 If the goal is to pull heated air off the ceiling and down to the floor you could try a length of 4" dryer duct running vertically in a corner with a small 'muffin fan' moving the air. You can direct the discharge where you want so you don't feel the draft.
Mickwhitt 4,626 #11 Posted January 6, 2022 Our truck workshop had exactly what Jeff is talking about, an intake up in the roof and a fan to pull down the warm air blowing it out at floor level. So easy to build and set up ant it worked well
