ri702bill 8,512 #1 Posted January 3, 2022 I had to change the starter recently and noticed the 1/4-20 screw in lower portion of the brush cap. @peter lena came to mind with his past posts about having decent grounds for all devices. I had a second Solenoid to Starter wire from a parts C81 - lo and behold -the right length with the correct 1/4" lug on one end and 5/16 on the other - to go from the cap bolt to the angle mount for the belt guard - with dielectric grease, of course.
ebinmaine 68,444 #2 Posted January 3, 2022 When I rebuild/make a harness I've gotten into the habit of running the battery ground cable directly to the starter at one of the attaching bolts... Then other smaller ground wires for other circuits. On a DC system it's unlikely to have too many ground wires..... until it starts to look like spaghetti. 😂😂
peter lena 8,734 #3 Posted January 3, 2022 @ri702bill agree on that, while I am not a rocket scientist I am a detail nut , found that more often than not, the wiring on the horses is typically in dire need of an upgrade. often refer to " bolt on electrical lugs " in your wiring mounting points , very solid and secure , but more important is that its a easy go to point , to add and continue your wiring. most electrical gain I found is the battery cable ground bolt , to add a 4-6 ga cable to your engine / chassis , at engine corner to frame ,next to clutch pedal . use serrated washers and dielectric grease, done that on my 3 horses , zero electrical issues , instant quick starts . went from that electrical lug to charging rectifier , with 10-12 gage wire to bolt mounts , then on to headlights , with same ground , not rocket science , but my horses consistently quick start and run strong. take advantage of something that works and make it , work easier and more reliable , thats only me , keep it greasy , pete
