Are these blades good?

Recommended Posts

Need to get a set of 106635 blades for a 42" rear discharge deck without the mulch kit.  I found these blades: Stens Medium-Lift Blade.  Are they good or is there something better to simply replace the factory blades.  I am also not sure if meduim lift is what I should get.

If the Stens blades are the cross reference blades to the 106635 then they should work fine. The rear discharge decks don't really need a lift blade because the don't need to throw the clippings out the side.

Supposed to be the cross reference, but if the lift is of no use, then would be best to get a low lift blade to save on HP.

Need to be careful with the higher lift blades because sometimes the back up-turned lip will strike the rear apron.

Take a look to see how much clearance you have there before you purchase!

I put a set of these on my 42" RD last season.  Working fine.  The deck is under a 14-8.  Horsepower is not an issue for me.

What lift were factory blades in order to compare?

I don't think I ever had a set of 'factory' blades.

This is what I got on there now, I think they are Stens, but not sure:

The lift on these is ONE INCH and I believe that is the 'standard' blade.

I looked into the Gator high lift mulching blades and they had 1-1/2" lift and would DEFINITELY have hit the rear apron, probably ventilated it with louvers.

This is the clearance I was talking about.  Keep in mind that my deck was abused by previous owner and it bent / twisted / mutilated and repaired.  Other decks I've seen have a bit more clearance, but not a heckuva lot more.

Those bolt heads are on the rear apron holding the gauge bar brackets.

So, check the clearance before you order high lift blades!

OH, by the way... I had a '67 Stang... I believe some called it a GT-500 ... digital phone photo of a polaroid picture, but it's all I've got.

That's 20-something me behind the wheel, ignore that 'finger' above the mirror.

And I let it get away.  :text-imsorry:

BUT... I needed a down payment for a house, and the house appreciated more than the Shelby did, or maybe about the same.

It's not the only one I lament 'letting go of'.

Ended up going with OEM toro blades set #106635.  Each blade is #106108 w145626 stamped on it.  It appears medium lift is the standard blade.  The one I took off had HLH2491 2001 stamped on them.  Havent figued out yet who the manufacturer is when I search for that number.
