Mower deck circular spindle "plate"

Recommended Posts

Brockport Bill

the 48 inch SD late 80's mower decks, apparently have a spindle deck "plate"  ( circular disc with spindle bolt holes) for inserting between the top of the deck and the pulley - I am doing a deck rehab and seem to be misssing it - How critical is that plate? Is it for spacing to move the pulley up vertically.... or for reinforcement strength --  obviously its there for a reason but how critical is it? If it's for vertical spacing i could just put washers under head of bolts - if its for strength for stress of center pulley/spindle, then i would need to order the disc plate.......... thanks

Must be something that they added later, because my  1980 deck has no such plate.

Is it this you mean? (not the belt shields) I got it with my c175, my other deck doesn't have it either.

sorry for the bad picture.

I believe the plate you are referring to goes under the center pulley on the 42" decks for reinforcement.

Only used on 42's

I thought the 48" decks had a large enforcment plate that covered all three spindles.      I don't see how a plate or washers under the spindle bolts would change the pulley or spindle height.

The pulley height is fixed by the spindle shaft.

to various responders:::: i looked at diagram on PartsTree -- it shows model deck # 05-48ms05 with an item # 41  - part # 106117 -- its the disc plate i was referring to -- yes, it makes sense for the 42 deck because the 42 mower does not have the added 3 spindle plate frame as the 48 shell across most of the shell for reinforcement of the entire deck  - however, ithe disc plate is shown in the diagram for the 48 which is why i believed i should have that disc plate to install ????????????

Typically, the schematics for the 42 and 48 SIDE DISCHARGE mower decks use exactly the same schematic due to NEARLY identical parts. Belt, pulleys, blades are the main deiiferences.  However,  the REINFORCEMENT PLATE is used ONLY on the 48" deck.  Inasmuch as the spindles are interchangeable, the purpose for the PLATE is (1) to reinforce the deck to minimize flexing and (2) mount the belt deck cover(s).  All of the 48 deck covers...either 1 pc or 2 pc bolt into the sides of this plate...covers for 42" decks bolt down thru the deck shell.

As Dave states: This is why you cannot trust the online parts schematics, too many of the assemblies that share parts or are similar are incorrect. This same thing happens frequently with drive belts , pulleys, etc....

Mine doesn't have that plate Bill (but it's an 05-48MS01 and not a 5)  If that goes UNDER item 2 I don't understand how that can work unless there is a depression in the deck shell for it to sit.

Ed is referring to item #2 I believe.

yes jeff the yellow highlite is the plate i was referencing --- although the diagram shows the disc "under the plate frame" i believe you are correct - it would be impossible to be under the larger 3 spindle frame - so i concluded it goes above the 3 spindle frame and under the pulley - of course there is a chance the diagram is incorrect -- and the disc plate is only made for the 42??? --- i 've often been confused looking at the online diagrams for the 42 and 48 because they seem to interweave the 42 and 48 diagrams

Yes, there sure is.  I have noticed that partstree often mixes the 42 and the 48 up and there are significant differences!  So one must be very careful!  ;)

It's because they aren't looking at the 'big picture'!  The WH parts lists CLEARLY show what's what and whoever loaded those diagrams clearly doesn't understand how to read them, and that the rest of the picture is essential!

Note the highlighted column on the left, gives quantity and part numbers for the different widths:

An original illustrated parts list will contain the answers.

ah ha -- thats helpful -- if i am reading parts list correctly????? clarifies the disc plate is for the 42, not 48 - but of course the diagram is VERY misleading suggesting the disc plate is on the 48 and UNDER the main 3 spindle plate - that drawing certainly didn't get scrutinized by the WH headquarters folks - should have been note in the diagram indicating the disc plate is on 42s only and the full 3 spindle plate is on 48s

Just to confuse things a little more, I've come across this photo titled "Welded in deck reinforcement" which I believe was available from WH. But it didn't have a part number,  soit could have been aftermarket.

I believe those are aftermarket.

There are 2 of them welded into this deck.

I bought those round inserts online then cut out the very cracked up spindle mount areas from the deck and had these welded in.

I actually bought 3 but only needed 2.

Of course this is a 48 deck so it also has the big plate on top.

This is the deck as received.

And the deck painted then assembled.

I have others but this is my main one.

Works perfectly with those plates welded in.

Sorry to get off topic, back to the OP's question.

Here is a 42" deck I restored and you can see the reinforcement ring on the center spindle under the pulley on top of the deck.

I also added one on the left side just because I had it here.

That 48"deck needed lots of parts that luckily I had here including a new top plate.

The 42 just needed a good cleanup and going over along with new paint.

The part number for the reinforcement plate for the 42" decks is 106117 Partstree has them listed for $14,43.

I don't think they came on any 42" decks from the factory.  It's just a repair part for those decks.
