WHY?

I am not going to name anyone, but it always amazes me how someone can show something that they do, and when asked how they do it , there is intentionally no answer. It is something I could never understand. I was always taught the exact opposite. To specially when showing something you did or create not to hide on how you do it, but rather share that knowledge with everyone, specially if asked how it is  you did it, so that knowledge can be shared , used, and mostly important improved,  as it is passed on. If not that what is the point of showing it? Just to merely stroke ones ego? Is it a game? if so then it should be a Whatizit. I am sorry about the little rant.

Agree @formariz… that is odd…

 

My experience is that the opposite is the norm on Red Square… I have yet to ask a question that wasn’t answered in great detail and with a courtesy that is unheard of on any other site…

 

no idea of the context / subject of your issue, but my only thought is that of patent theory - as @Pullstart alludes to above -  someone thinking they are protecting their product / design…? but I doubt that on this site given the old tractors we putz with…

I worked with a lot of guys who where so insecure in their jobs they would offer nothing as far as insight, knowledge short cuts ....nothing. Then when I got promoted and they didn't, guess what, They would get all mad and wonder why. All the guys I taught left after me. So now it's back to a bunch a guys knowing a little here and a little there. They still call me 4 yrs. later wanting to know where a valve is or how to adjust a program.

How much is a consult fee?  Usually I hear it’s about 4x a normal pay rate… given their need for knowledge and no benefits paid out.

My fee is free batteries for my garage door opener and battery back up. Sections of ridgi-wall when I build something and an invite to the Christmas party!

Sometimes you've got to wonder why people feel they can take credit for the craftsmanship of others. A friend of mine in Florida sold one of his street rods to a fellow from Ohio, he and I had put in a lot of long nights building that car. A couple years later I was at the NSRA Nationals in Columbus OH and saw the car. The buyer was busily boasting about everything he had done on the build of the street rod. I asked how he had done some of the custom body work (my contribution to the project). He was sort of vague in his answers and I waited until no one else was near by to let him know I had done the work in question.

The last job I had before going into business for myself was with a large corporation that was staffed with those folks.  They got away with it, and were often promoted, because top brass was clueless about how things actually worked.  I'll give one example: A chemical engineer was in charge of the high speed stamping operation.

That seems completely reasonable to me.   We all know Chemical Engineers are the smartest of all the engineering disciplines.

The Brass was clueless a lot of the time because managers/supervisors kept stuff hidden from them if the end of the year bottom line determined the bonus amount.

I remember during a 50 million dollar project at the hospital I worked at. The administration offices had to move to another building so new OR's/waiting area could be built. Admin would move into the vacated OR area after renovations were done. So they moved into a temporary location in an old stick built building from the 50's. Of course it got spruced up for them but the building was still junk. The 2 years later the project was almost done and I was repairing a heating issue in the CEO's office. I was ready to leave and he says sit down a minute. And asks me what needed to be done to get this building up to snuff for future use. I told him a bulldozer and started telling him everything that was shot in this building. He was horrified that it was allowed to get that bad. Needless to say, my boss wasn't happy!

I was lucky enough to work with an old time finish carpenter that was very willing to share his knowledge with me.  His way of thinking was the more I knew the less he had to worry about or had to do.  I carried that thought through all the years I spent in the trade.  It allowed me the time I needed to keep a job running smoothly, and to be able to spend my time doing things others were not ready to tackle just yet.  Just seemed to make for a better working environment all the way around.

Many of the senior leaders I worked with were fearful of smart/skilled subordinates they couldn't suppress. One of my boss's peers told me I "intimidated the hell out out of" my boss and who'd eventually find a way to get rid of me. The peer left the firm shortly afterward for a plum position, but he was right--a couple months later came a buyout offer I couldn't refuse.

Still, over my 45-year career, I worked with many good knowledge sharers and I did my best to emulate them.

Some times other things more important then the Wheel Horse board get in the way. Sickness and death to name the most important. All of use have been there at one time or another. 

I have been around since 2009 as Don1977 then Lee1977. If I need some information about a certain Wheel Horse I usually PM a known source. Have never been disappointed, as I have always got good information when I needed it.

I learned wood working and building, electrical, pluming, farming and forestry from my dad. I can remember being in the wood on the wrong end of a cross cut saw when I could barely keep my end pulled tight enough to keep it from bending.

I missed learning from my grandpa, because my uncles family lived with him and my brother, sister, and I were never welcome there. Thinking back it was a great loss for us and grandpa.

It is a disservice to others when posting about a project and a specific question comes up just to intentionally avoid the answer specially when it is done in an obvious manner. Not right and a disservice to basically all members in this forum. I can't even count how many times a question has been asked, and people have actually gone to their sheds in the middle of the night with flash light in hand to check their tractors and provide an answer and even a photo. To someone who has a problem and is looking to fix it that is a precious attitude to have and luckily it it is what happens with very little exception in this forum. A question is to be answered not to be ignored . There is no reason for that except for a selfish one. It is obviously not a case of not knowing the answer for one would not boast about a project progress or method without knowing what one has done to accomplish it. What makes this a great place is the willingness to share information, knowledge,and suggestions at a seconds notice by everyone.
