Snowblower 1977 C-120

Hi all, 

New user here. Just got my dads 1977 c-120 running. Have a plow but am wondering which model snow throwers will fit. A friend of mine has a 79361 2 stage blower, but I can’t find if it would fit or not. 
 

anyone have any info on this?

12 hp is not really enough for a 2 stage to be fully effective.

Great info thank you. Btw, how well do the single stage blowers work? I live outside Buffalo and we have gotten dumped on before. Luckily not this year 🤞🏻

A single stage works well most of the time, although they do tend to plug in wet heavy snow. Learning to adjust your feed rate for conditions will be the key.

Thanks again everyone for your help. Glad I found this forum. Have one more question regarding parts and the best place to try and buy from that ships. Specifically looking for wheel weights and more importantly a rear axle hitch for a plow

    IMO, 12HP is the minimum required to turn a ss blower  and 16HP  is the minimum for a two stage.      BTW, is your C-120 a gear or hydro drive?

A single stage likes to have a lot of material fed to it in most cases. Seems the harder you push them the better they work. Wet, heavy, slushy snow can go either way, feed it too hard and it can plug, feed it too little and it can plug. Like I said it takes a little practice to learn what makes your blower happy.

I agree and disagree Ed .... I wouldn't be afraid to run say a small single SS on a 10 but don't we know some guys that run them on an eight? Say a B or C 80? Anyone that does please chime in. 

I always favored the bigger HPs but what little sno we get these years...

I’m just excited to try it, even with just the plow, now that I got it running. even with no wheel weights. I’m hopeful it will do well. I work for a school and plow there so when I get home I’m tired and just want to hop on something and go vs. dealing with my walk behind snowblower. 🤞🏻

You can run a blower on  a Lawn Ranger. If there is enough snow to justify using a blower the first pass is painful lots of clutch slipping to keep ground speed down. Since he has an 8 speed he can solve that .  But it is going to take a long time to get the driveway clear.  Used my L107 one year a blower.  never since i like to limit seat time in the cold .

Note that wheel weights from most any tractor that has 12" rear rims will fit on your tractor. I never pass up a set of cast iron wheel weights that are being sold for what I deem a good price, manufacturer does not matter to me. A good going rate is $150 for cast weights, I have seen them as high as $300. The plastic weights that are filled with ? work as well. Weight is weight in my opinion.

 

A post in our want adds might find you a plow hitch. Here is a source for some quality after market ones as well. Lowell make top notch products.

I agree an 8 or 10 would spin a 32 or 36 incher, but would it move snow efficiently?   My only experience was with a 42" with side wings on my C-120 Hydro.

Like Dan stresses, for the ss's to work efficiently, they have to be kept full of snow   and I found it was a fine line to vary ground speed to keep the chute full and not bog the HH120 where I was losing auger RPM.      With the ss blower on the 520, power was no issue. In fact I went to a smaller drive pulley on the blower to increase the auger speed.

Being able to vary ground speed to keep the auger  full is also the reason I stress Hydros for a ss blower.

    For us old timers, the hydraulic lift is also a requirement..not a luxury.

I think the summary is that it is "horses for courses"! Each system has pros and cons. Lots of members here have both using two tractors (hence the warning about the "addiction", in case you missed it ).

Two things not mentioned for plows: 1. you have to have a place to push the snow--and with long term accumulation, that can present a challenge. With blowers, you often can just chuck it where you want it.  2. Scraping with a steel-edged plow will mark up pavement or concrete (threads here mention plastic and rubber edges members have added).

Thanks, I have a rubber cutting edge so good there, just need to get some weight. I may still try and get a ss blower - kinda intrigued, lol

FWIW they make rubber tire chains that I heard work well on concrete and blacktop.
