c-175-8

I have 2 175-8 tractors,one was given to me and was used to roll a yard recently and the other bought for the plow (it doesn't run previous owner said it wasn't getting any spark)My intent is to put the plow on the running tractor and use it.

Needless to say I have questions,First off the numbers off the tractors indicate a 1981(01-17k802-5601 and01-17k802-21311)

1)why does tractor data say these are 17hp

2)what is the proper air filter for the square air cleaner

3)Is the round cleaner engine have a coil and square one a magneto?

4)Are there any concerns I haven't touched on

Because the engine is a Kohler KT-17 which is a 17 HP TWIN

They should both be coil and points ignition, to my knowledge the KT17 never came with a magneto.

As for the air filter, you can download the parts lists and manuals for the C-175 from the "Manuals" section for free.

There were two different air filters used on these.  The round one has a 'summer / winter' setup on it that prevents the carb from icing up during winter use.

Don't 'lose' those mufflers if they are any good!  They are made of UNOBTAINIUM !

17.5hp twin, hence the KT-175 and C-175 designation.

The difference in air cleaners may indicate a series1 or 2 engine.

The KT17 is listed by Kohler as 17 hp.  i always the thought the 5 in 175 just indicated it was one of a C series  C-85, C-105 C-125 etc  to C175

The red engine with the square filter is a Magnum 18  not original to the tractor

Incidentally the heic format you used is very awkward for the nonApple world to use

Spec number is an the circled plate

The 'top hat' was available for the Series 1 also.  At one time it could be purchased as a 'kit' that included the heat shield with the hole in it for 'winter' use.

I THINK, but haven't been able to confirm this, that the Series II engines all came with the 'top hat' air filter.

One would unscrew the air filter top, clock it around and put the 'snout' over that hole to draw heated air from around the exhaust manifold rather than from the tube around the flywheel housing.

The 'other' filter available on the KT17 is what I call the 'tear drop'.

So it is!  Good eye Paul!

And this begs the question: Are the Magnums Coil and points? or Magneto?  Perhaps that's why the OP is asking?

Running KT-17 here as well!

Series 1 are known for being less durable when driving in hilly terrain

I have one, luckily I live next to the flats lands of the Netherlands. So this part of Belgium is very flat too.

And that explains the plug wires exiting from the flywheel shroud:

I guess the M18 would be a drop-in replacement for the KT17 then?  with some minor wiring changes, notably the key switch.

I put one (Magnum 18) in a C-175 using a relay. The instructions were on the site here. Much easier than messing with key switch/adapting wiring harnesses because I did that method too.

Super sweet motor

I believe that the 5 at the end indicates the second series of "C's", AKA the black hoods. A "C" series that ends with a 1 would have the earlier style hood. ( C101, C141, etc.).

And the C series  ending with 0 have the gastank behind the dash and the battery on the frame.  (C100, C140, etc)

C1X0= 1974-1977

C1X1= 1978-1979

C1X5= 1980-1984 (apart from the C185 which used the the 5 already in 1975)
