A kid and his 604

Alex held me captive in the garage for 8 hours today. I still couldn’t get spark with the tecumseh h60 that came with it so I took my complete spare for my 603 off the shelf and wouldn’t you know it no spark. I fought with it for a while and got frustrated (give me a good old Kohler any day). I got to thinking. I had another one mounted in a suburban frame for a potential rat rod speeder (like 7 years ago) that I never finished. So he pulled the engine and I tinkered a little bit and boom spark. He then went to town on getting all the engine pieces back on, engine mounted, hood on, belt guard on, clutch rod and brake rod on and his seat. It runs but needs a little adjusting. He’s happy as can be. Few small things and a couple bigger pieces left and he should have it cruising in no time.

Not like I’m complaining, I’ll drool over Kohlers all day vs Teckys… but on Jan 11 didn’t y’all have good spark?

We did. Then discovered it was out of time and firing wrong. From that point on I couldn’t of made it spark even if i had hooked it up to a wall outlet 😂. I tried everything in the book and then some and could not get it to spark ever again. Although the mechanic at worked offered to look at it so I may take him up on that. But yeah from that point on I’ve been struggling and he’s been hounding. This gets him going again.

It seems there was a GM hei ignition trick, or similar?  @pfrederi?  @ebinmaine?  Maybe neither of you?

I know ebinmaine gave me a few videos and they were a huge help at making me understand. Even with that I just couldn’t get it. Now that I don’t have any pressure from Alex I can tinker with the other 2 and see if I can figure it out at my leisure.

I don't believe that will work on the H60. Think it works on the cast iron

10 & 12 horse engines. I have had trouble with some of these points they

sell today. Occasionally have had a bad coil. When I did work on these more

often would never pull the whole unit off, did not like to have to pull the head

to reset the timing. If a line is scribed on the post prior to removal they  an be

put back very close to where they were. Used to work on quite a few of these.

I definitely learned a lesson of not to take the whole assembly off. I will be more careful from

now on for sure. Hope the next project he finds gets me back into a Kohler. Oh wait he still has his little reel mower with the Briggs on it we need to work on. To many projects to keep straight and all my ice fishing gear in the middle of it all. I need a barn with room for his stuff and mine.

Here’s probably one of the last updates on Alex’s project. It’s on 4 wheels finally! Needs only a few minor things but it’s close and he finally got to drive it today! It’s so muddy he didn’t go far just out to let me take some pictures and back. Thanks for all your support. Once the yard hardens back up I will get some pics of him out and about. After he’s used it around the house this year he still plans on restoring it like my 603.

stayed tuned he picked up another project wheel horse today! The kid has got the bug!
