Tilling with a Hydro

Recommended Posts

I have been tilling for the last 2 years with my 8 speed but I have been thinking about installing the tiller on my C145.  I read some posts from some of the members that said they felt that the tiller was pushing the tractor to fast.  I would like to get some input from the hydro users.  Is the push controllable with the motion control or do you have to throttle down?

On most all standard size hydro WH, you will most likely feel that the tiller tries to push the tractor up in speed, and you will need to control the speed continuously with the go stick. Less so in loose soil, more so in tough conditions. Tilling is the only real chore for your size WH that springs to mind, where manual gear is actually preferable. I'm not saying that you can't till with it, quite the opposite. It is indeed doable, but most often with some more fuzz compared to a manual of same size.

Part of the answer is what are you are tilling.  My clay and rock needs  8 spd gear drive in 1st low range and  be ready for the beating you the tiller and machine take...

Tilling loose dirt no rocks and no roots.  It’s an existing garden that I have been tilling for years.

You might be OK then, but it will never be as good as a gear drive.

My garden is 8" of loose topsoil. No rocks or roots. I have used both a hydro and 8 speed to till it. If there are any uneveness of the surface the hydro constantly hunts. I only use the 8 -speed now. Your2019_03_30.Garden.jpg.04348b59e52e644d3f39c4c1c3aaa9b3.jpg     experience may be different.

Never had that issue with my 416-H, i ran about 1/2 throttle and set my speed then dropped the tiller, you'd feel it push but i never noted a change of pace 20150130_154830.jpg.2810d4fa66934f484fd73e34e9d40ae0.jpg

Thanks for all the replies.  I am going to try the hydro.  My C145 Auto has nothing to do and it’s getting bored. 😂 lol

Nice soil.   Breaking Sod or my clay rock mix gear drive is much better...

This is Southern clay/loam, the first 4" is like breaking bed rock, once broken up it works in well
